After the dog goes back to the shelter, pay them a visit the next day.  Slip them a $50 to "accidentally" euthanize the dog immediately.  Or just go "adopt" the dog yourself and then take it on a nice trip down a one-way country road.  Don't forget to take your shotgun just in case you run into a situation on the back roads that would require use of the gun back there where nobody else in the world would see what was happening.  *wink wink nudge nudge*

You said it yourself, "your friends dogs are the biggest wimps". That's how they came, they're not all the same and how they are raised does not make all the difference. When the police are selecting dogs, they look for the most aggressive ones. Their training can not make the dog aggressive, it has to naturally be that way. Sure there are Pitts that aren't aggressive, but the tendency is greatly increased. Why take the chance. Certain dogs do have certain tendencies. My dog's a Border Collie Golden Retriever cross. He's yellow but he looks and ACTS exactly like a Border. Anyone who's had much to do with Borders will tell you they have some very distinct behaviors.

I agree.  I had a border collie australian shepard mix which was the most hyper dog I have ever seen.  I wasn't able to take care of her appropriately so I sent her to an animal home find place.  I see you point but I still stand by mine.  I don't believe there are bad dogs just bad owners.  Same with people.  Those that come from a history of violence don't necassarily mean they are going to be violent.  But I understand the risk.

Mike I am glad that you got things worked out with your neighbor.  And I certainly understand you protecting your family.  If dog came at me or anyone I cared about I would do the same thing no matter what the breed.  It is really nice of you to buy him a new dog.  The dog you are talking about (Vizsla) its a lot like a Weimeraner except brown.  Here is a link to a description of them http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/vizsla.htm .  It will probably be pretty hyper for the first 3 years and bark at everything.

I would just make sure you stay away from the tennessee bird dogs.  There just seems to be something wrong with them. Big Smile

Meatball, I don't fully agree with you about the police only picking the most aggressive dog. My oldest brother is a k-9 officer and he said that the most aggressive dog is not always what they are looking for. If you are saying that they only want aggressive dogs, then why are they not using pitbulls since they are so aggressive. They use dogs that are smart and that have the ability to learn and listen really well, a lot of their aggression is from training. If the police dogs were only aggressive and training played no part, then they would not listen to the officers when they tell them to release the suspect. Instead the police k-9 would kill every suspect instead of releasing them because aggression is all they are. Instead the are made to be aggressive when instructed to be. My brother's police k-9 has tore some people up in his time but as soon as he's told to release he does. My brother's dog is also a great dog who knows when it's time to be nice and when it's "time to go to work" those words are like a switch. When my brother says that to his dog the dog knows what he is saying, all because of his training. Also, I would like to say that the pitbull I had was the most aggressive puppy in the litter, but I was able to change him from an aggressive puppy when I first got him to a really sweet dog, who as an adult would play with any kind of dog without a problem. The most least aggressive and most calm puppy from his litter "his sister" turned out to be really aggressive towards other dogs and really hyper. How do I know this? I know the people who got her and they did a bad job raising her. The allowed her to jump on people, when she first starting behaving bad she wasn't corrected for her behavior. So I am speaking from my own personal experiences and someone I know's experiences. I can't speak for every single dog or owner. But if you think the way they are brought up plays no part then I think you should get two pitbull puppies. The most aggressive and the least aggressive in the litter. Keep them seperated never letting them see of hear each other. Then take the aggressive one raise him in the best best possible way. That means no aggressive playing only being sweet to it and never allow it to be aggressive, if it does anything aggressive correct the dog immediately. Also having him around as many other animals you can get him around. Then you take the sweet one from the litter and have it trained by the police or whomever you want. Have them only teaching him to attack and be mean. No release training or commands. Then after a year or so take them around each other and other animals and see which dog is more aggressive. By the way Meatball, i'm not trying to argue with you and am only joking about this last part, but think about what i'm saying. The way a dog is brought up can play a huge part on how the dog will act.

Mike, I think what you did was very upstanding and maybe it will teach a 19 yr old something about life.  If it would have been me, I'm sure that I would have given it a load of 00 or a 7.62.  I would take some time and help your neighbor to raise the new dog correctly and make sure that it is well socialized with your lab.  I have an old min-pin and it would be a quick death for it against a pit.  You should contact the rescue group in person and explain what happened and make sure that someone else doesn't get this animal (Mike Vic included) and get hurt.  You are also right that $400 for a new dog is a lot cheaper than all the legal costs that you would incure for protecting your family.

I know the voices aren't real, but they do have some good ideas.

Tyler 53  and CBushmaker, I agree with almost everything you say. I'm not an English major or I'm sure I would be better at getting my point across. I did not mean to say that upbringing had NO part in a dogs behavior. I know that the police are not only looking for aggression in their dogs but they are looking for a dog with the right attitude and aggression is certainly part of it. They use primarily Shepherds because they are well suited for the job both physically and mentally. I'm sure your brother would be the first to tell you that most don't meet the standard.

I think you'd also agree that most people have relatively little control over their dogs. Another reason why I don't think people should have these dogs. There's no control over who gets them or how they handle them.

    ohiomike:

New question: Is it wrong of me to pursue to get them all banned throughout the city. There are two near by cities that have already done so.. I think its probably wrong for several reasons and believe one group of people shouldn't have the power to out vote another group.. but would like your Opinions

From where I sit, it doesn't matter what you do.  Laws don't prevent crimes.  They just define punishment.

Let the dogs run.  Carry a gun.

    It's just easier.

If that doesn't sound like a good plan, it's because it isn't one.  But there will be a backlash, lobbyist, death threats... and general bull$hit involved in banning a particular breed of dog.   And it probably wouldn't pass constituional muster.

And for the record: My dog is NOT aggressive, but he bites.  If a stranger ( this includes my new roommate )  goes to pet him... he seems to assume that they want to stick their hand in his mouth, and accomadates them quickly.  He has never drawn blood.

He will work very hard at getting out of the way if you walk toward him.

    He's a sissy.

    He bites.

    huh?

Yep, dangerous dogs for sure. I was feeding my buddy's pit while he was on vacation once and had an episode with the dog. Normaly it was a nice dog but for some reason this time when I opened the door to come in and feed him, I bent over to pat him on his head and he learched up at me. I punched him right between the eyes and he dropped like a sack of potato's.

The one big problem with a "BAD" animal, dog, horse, bull or what ever, is it looks just like a "GOOD" one. Most of the time you can not tell them apart untill is attacking you or your family. Not all dogs are good with all people and places. Mike you did the right thing. You can sleep at night for all the reason that you stated. Having to carry a gun just to walk around the house or down the street?? You know what is out there. We sould not have to live in fear of anything, a good .45 helps along those lines.

And thats how we do it downtown.

Good job Mike on coming to an understanding.  My uncle had Vesla's and used them for hunting pheasents great noses, easy around kids, and not prone to fight other dogs.  Those two dogs were always around at family reunions and the younger one had enough patience to take the little kids for rides.  When my uncle had to put the older one to sleep health reasons he cried.  I'll beat that 19 year old neighbor will learn to love this dog more, because it can be taken more places.  The Vesla has about the same build and tempermant as a Lab.Yes

That is funny!  Not the part about him learching but the part about him dropping like a sack of potato's.  For some reason pit bulls do that.  And before everyone says I told you so let me explain what I have noticed.  My buddies pit learches towards people's faces and at first it scared the crapp out of me.  What I realized was he was learching to basically nose but me then lick my face.  My dog doesn't do it so much she just brushes up against me like a cat till she get's me to pet her.  After a while we got my buddies dog to stop learching.  But it is a weird common trait that I think they do out of an expression of excitement.  I know knee him in his chest if he tries it.  Punching works as well apparently.  LOL!

Mike, for future reference I think your att'y's advise was wise.Good compromise. If the offer was not taken I would have suggested something like bear repellent spray like they use in Alaska.Probably less chance of you violating firearms laws (which usually have elevated penalties). Before anyone takes this suggestion ,check your local laws/ regs,re: use of this spray.BTW I probably will purchase some for my personal safety @ WF4.I've got to keep Badassram from continually trying to break into my room each nightDevil.

If you want to see how well a "ban" on the pit works take a trip to cincinnati and go to otr. To me it looks like about half the thugs have one and the cops know they are there, they just don't do anything about it. I can't speak for other cities but in the natty it just doesn't work.

I own a Chihuahua, and you are right, they are the meanest dam dogs I have ever seen. Try putting a Chihuahuas brain in a pit bull's body.
