Looking At A New Car - Again...

Yesterday, the wife and I took a quick look at the VW Eos. (Side note - she looks damned good in it, and the car isn't that bad either!!) You guys have any knowledge/experience with these? We were on our way to dinner, stopped in, looked at it for 10 minutes, had to go. The salesguy gave us a brochure, but we didn't converse much about it. Price wasn't too bad, low, 30s. Any thoughts appreciated - Jim

Nice car, I found a Motorweek review on YouTube. I just don't like that it's premium fuel only.

direct competitor to the eos over here is the opel/vauxhall/saturn astra twintop. i like it better because it's not that round like a chewing gum
Life may be hard but the alternative sucks!

I think that last months Consumer Reports had something on it.  I will check and see...

I had one of the new bettle convertibles and it was a major POS!  Recalls and electrical issues that would make a British car look like a Honda.  The VW customer service is even more of a joke if you ever have to call them.  After about 15 calls, they extended my warranty for another year and I sold the POS about 2 weeks later when the entire headlight wiring harness shorted out (was looking at cars that evening).  I did tell they kind (but clueless) folk in customer service that at least fast food drive up windows had better service and you had a decent chance of getting what you ordered.  The car mags have been beating up VW for quality issues for some time now.  All I can say is buyer beware with this brand.  By comparison, I bought a Honda Civic sedan and it has never given me a single issue.  Liked it so much that I bought the wife in dark gray just like mine.  One last thing about VW, they have some of the highest labor charges in the free world, so if it gets worked on outside of warranty, bring lots of $$$$$$$$$.

I know the voices aren't real, but they do have some good ideas.

Looked at one with the wife, but she decided that she liked a Nissan better.  Have never dealt with Volkswagon so I don't know about quality issues.  One of the guys at work bought a Passat he says he likes it.

Thanks for the insight on this  - I don't know a damned thing about a VW either, so I better start reading into it.

The premium fuel thing is what bugs be about the Murano now.

Timoken... What's a gallon on gas in Germany now - about $7.50? And we're bitching here - meanwhile, the Germans keep building bigger and bigger V8s. What's up with that. You guys all independently wealthy?? LOL!!!

There's been some pretty big issues with VW's over the years. Seems to change a lot from model to model, do your homework.

Personally I used to be a true believer in Japanese = true value but I've had great success with domestic products recently.

I think you pay a premium for European cars, it's like buying a Harley you're paying for the name.

I had a VW once(about 10 yrs ago).   a GTI  was a blast to drive but I will never buy one again.  it seems like A LOT of the parts are "dealer only" and a lot of the parts had to be installed with "dealer only" specific tools.

I know a vw tech and when last I talked to him he said to stay away from the gasoline engine v-dubs he did however really like the diesel this was however before the 8 cyl engines came out in the US.

If you are not part of the solution then you are part of the precipitate

Re: Looking At A New Car - Again...

I bought an '02 Jettal GLI. Thing is fast and sporty and fun to drive, but like a few posts ago said the maintenance costs are ridiculous. I have not had anything go wrong with the car at all, except i have had to change the headlight bulbs twice in three years, but i always have them on and i buy crappy bulbs. I have never had an issue with customer service, but we have a large dealership that does a lot of business. My fuel cap says premium fuel only and for years i just put in the plus (middle) gas thinking that it was a balance, but with fule prices going where they are i am going down to the regular. Have i enjoyed the car and i am i going to drive it into the ground? yes. Would i go out and buy another? probably not.

Even a fish wouldn't get in to trouble if it kept its mouth shut...
