    RAM396 Lowering Kit Modified

I have been looking at following ram396's lead on the lowering kit. His looks like the best offering out there. From looking at his, I have created this. It eliminates the need for the threaded rod and one set of Jamnuts.

The only difference is that you need to cut a 9" turnbuckle down to 8.25" and you should take .375 inches from each side of the turnbuckle ends so you still maintan equal depths for adjustment.

This arrangement gives approximately 1 inch of adjustment. I thought it best to keep at least .5 inch in each end of the turnbuckle.

Does anyone know how much adj = ride height? I have seen it in here before, but cannot find it again. I think I remember 1" of adj equals about 3 inches of lowering (more than needed).

    All parts are from www.midwestcontrol.com

You will still need to get the bolts and spacers that ram396 mentioned, but this seemed like it would be sturdier having one less point of potential failure.

Why yes son, once upon a time there was a hot rod of a bike, but only a few of us had the wisdom to realize it's value!, would you like to see one?

    Re: RAM396 Lowering Kit Modified

I thought about doing that at first but the main reason I used a 4" turnbuckle and threaded rod was so you would have better access to the front jam nut. Once it's installed in the bike it's pretty tight to get 2 wrenches up in there. This way you never have to jack with the jam nut at the female hiems joint.
Actually the next batch of kits I'm making up will have a 3" turnbuckles so it's even eaiser to get to the front jam nut.

You may want to make your turnbuckle a little longer as the length of the stock links are 11 3/16" from center line of hole.
You also might want to check on there stock on the 9" turnbuckles and MSM-8 they told me they would be out of stock until the end of Jan.
    Good luck!

If you only do what you know you can do- you'll never do very much!!

thanks for the feedback and I may have overlooked that (access). Yeah, I talked to them too, but have also found others, but not as cheap as midwest.

I will reconsider the turnbuckle and rod....

scawein... using the search feature i came up with this thread:http://www.rswarrior.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=49949 [;)]
DragonRider....Just my .02 but they look longer than RAM396's photos but i've been wrong before [:0]
I assume you measured the stock links and made your adjustments accordingly [;)]
    • Approx 3/16" longer = 1" lower
    • Approx 3/16" shorter = 1" higher

Just be sure you have adequate thread engagement with all the adjustable parts. IMO, at least 1 1/2 ~ 2 times the diameter. As i recall it's 1/2" thd'd rod = 3/4" ~ 1" thd engagement min

ram396...Using an Excel spreadsheet and simple proportion i came up with the following based on these constraints & parameters:
Stretching the links .1875" (3/16) = 1.000" Lower my bike
    1/2"-20 thds/in = .050" per full turn (1/20)
    Simple proportion:
    .188/1.00 = .050/x
    .188x = .050
    x = .050/.188 = .267"
Hence; each full turn of the turnbuckle lowers or raises the bike .267"
    2 turns = .533"
    3 turns = .800"
    4 turns = 1.067"
    5 turns = 1.333

As you stated, a little goes a long wayyyyyy

    Re: RAM396 Lowering Kit Modified

Thanks for the info. I orignally measured 11.0 with the shock on the bike. But from what I have gotten from you guys, I will adjust my numbers accordingly.

Ram396 offered a valid reason to use the turnbuckle AND the threaded rod, so we will see how it comes out.

AlanH, thanks for the offical data. I will be ordering the parts soon and bringing this together, so I will post up once it is done.

I have bought from Aetna Screw when Midwest Control was out of stock.
I haven't been able to find the hex turnbuckles anywhere else.

    Re: RAM396 Lowering Kit Modified

    Cheers Ron!

I want to do the 6 degree trees thing.
The handling is seriously messed up as it is, (due to the 300 wheel) so I don't suppose they will make it any worse!

I went to France last weekend to watch the final round of the world superbikes. The total distance was 1050 miles. Kept off the motorways as much as possible. The ride was good and the poor mans kit did it's job perfectly, but some of the high speed bends were - lets just say ...interesting!

The warrior caused a bit of a stir around the sportbikes and touring BMW's!

Those sleepy little French villages will probably have recovered by now! [}:)]

I'm Leaving Monday to live in Ireland for good.
All my stuff is already there (wife included!)
I have decided to take a couple of days to get there instead of the 1 day thrash. Staying in Wales overnight and taking in the Snowdonia mountains on the way.

It's the turn of the sleepy WELSH and IRISH villages this time.
Brace yourselves folks.... Midnight is coming![:)]

Man I envy you nothing but flat lands here in south Texas and hot as HELL.
I grew up in the North East part of the US, at times I wish I was back there, until winter comes![:D]
Drive safe and take it easy on the twisty's!!
I would give my left one to make that trip with ya!![:p]
