DIY BAK, ais, dyno, custom mapped, & UPDATED*PICS*

UPDATE: 8-16-07 Pictures & DYNO SHEET ADDED.

Last week I worked hard on making a DIY V-BAK like those I've seen on this forum. So, here is what I got, all locally.

    K&N Filters - $51.14(both) (Iron Thunder)
    2 45* street elbow PVC - $1.99 (both) (Lowes)
Radiator Hose - $13.95($pricey$) (Advanced Auto)
    Clamps - $2.99 (6) (Advanced Auto)
Little Filters - $16.95 (both) (Advanced Auto)
Vaccume Plugs (for ais) - $2.95 (bundle) (Advanced Auto)
Sheet of Aluminum (ais) - $10.25 (1/8th) (Lowes)
    ------------------------
Custom Map + Dyno - $175.00 (Iron Thunder)
300 Mile Test Drive - $30.00 (GAS) (Roughly @ BP always)

    Total parts: - $100.22
    Total labor + gas: - $305.22

Prior to these mods, I had a custom map done (@ Iron Thunder) w/ Bub Jug Huggers, PC3usb (duh), Stock Airbox, and with the AIS functional. It pulled in "see dyno sheet at bottom" of torque on his DynoJet3 after mapping. So, 1 year later and about 4-5k more miles on the bike, I do these mods. First off, I do the AIS block off, removing everything as to REDHORSE's website. Made my own plates out of aluminum, sealed them off.. Done with that. Now, the air box, removed everything... Installed radiator hose, stacks (PVC), and filters. Took it for a test drive, more mid range in the "seat in pants".

Take it to the Dyno next morning early to avoid heat and humidity. Puts on dyno, does the mapping, and the effects are.........................."see dyno sheet at bottom" of torque. This is with the A/F ratio perfect.

So, we lost HP and TQ. Kinds sucks, but has more midrange, so it seems, just less numbers. Personally I don't believe in numbers, I've seen them fluctuate from day to day, morning to night, and month to month. So, I just wanted the A/F right.

Martha (Gokey63) and I went to VA for a trip to see my relitives and prior to these mods, after mapping it last year, we were getting 85-90 miles to a tank. 100miles on E. This trip, we put over 300 miles on our warrior and averaged 115 miles per tank before the F light, we filled up to be sure it was working.

So, less power "on paper", better MPG, a job worth doing in my oppinion. [:D][:D]

PS: Pictures tonight of the dyno sheets and mods, but curious what the gain should be with doing the VBAK mod should be?

    The work.... In pictures. [8D]

    AIS Block OFF....

    DYNO SHEET.
BLUE= 6-27-06 Dyno map (after custom map /w stock air box and ais) @ 43% humidity @ 90.01 F. heat.
    RED= 8-2-07 Dyno map (after custom map /w VBAK mods no ais) @ 21% hhumidity @ 94.8 F. heat.

I'm wondering about the use of Pvc verses stainless?? I used a Dynomax J-bend . You have to do some measuring and cutting, but well worth it. I could not beleive the dif over stock!

kinda wondering about the pvc too, if it gets too hot it might get soft and deform

I don't think there's enough heat under the tank to deform the PCV. But I would think the smooth curve of the metal velocity stacks would be much more effective than the sharp bends in the PVC.

If I had to guess I would say you are probably getting more air with the PVC than you would stock but less performance than if you went with a tuned setup.

Actually, I wonder how much benefit you are really getting putting the PVC in there over just putting the filters right on the throttle bodies ala Baron's kit.

Your numbers mirror mine, Churchkey,BUB "Huggers" and PCIII. I pull just under 82hp and 102 something torque. The only difference is before my tuning I pulled 73hp and 91 torque (my bike was factory way rich). The only thing that may be a slight difference is I cut 8" of pipe out off the exhaust, if that was a gain or a hurt is unknown as of this point. My feelings were that I gained in the 3k up RPM range and my throttle had more of a twitch to it.

Nice writeup on what you did and what the results were. I think you probably would have gained 20-30 hp and ft-lbs of torque, though, if you'd followed my directions for the AIS block-off instead of following Redhorse's directions. [^][:p][:)][:o)]

Hey, I looked for them.. But your site was down. That was the first place I looked for. I've read them about 50 times from your site last year, but never actually did anything till now. [:(]

Assuming your new numbers are peak numbers, any gains/losses in the low and mid ranges? Any graphs available?

I have them, but the initial graph (1st custom map /w stock box), and second custom map were done in a different format, so it is hard to compare. But, I am going to head to the shop today, time willing, and have them do a compare printout. I am curious myself.

I think most of us have read somewhere in this forum that slamming the filters right on top of the throttle bodies does little to nothing for performance. I believe I have read that we need to get them off the TB's with some sort of v-stack wether they are DIY or woody's, but something. I believe the reading tells us about speeding up the air movement, or air turbulance. Then it starts getting real technical. BTW....ABS (black plastic melt point is 221F) and PVC (white plastic melts at 176F) If I am not mistaking. I used the ABS/BLACK just for this fact alone.
    He's coming, are you ready?

Gowen, you said it's been a year's difference between the dyno runs. You have to take in account the difference on those two differen days: 1. ambient temperature & 2. barometric pressure. That could very well affect your current & previous #'s.

Filters straight on the throttle bodies is better than stock air box for air flow. More torque and HP.
When you use a V-stack instead of just the filters on the throttle bodies you're actually gonna get a little less
torque gain but quite a bit more HP gains compared to the filters alone.

My concern w/using the PVC is the thickness of the PVC walls, as compared to a stainless (or similar) pipe (ala woodies).
Effectively reducing the diameter of the intake seems kinda counter productive...
