    red dust

I just had a tire change and after the job was done i was hearing a noise around the pully when i was riding. so today i pulled the pully cover off and found some red dust . my question is when the pully nut is loose should there be any play in the splines and pully. 05 with 12,000 mile's

    flatacebroke,

The red dust would indicate that your front pulley nut has come loose...The noise is the pulley being loose...There seems to be a rash of that happening...Take the nut off and apply some Loc-Tite and torque to spec. Make sure your belt is aligned too...And has proper tension...

This has happened to me. I STRONGLY recommend that you remove the belt and check the pulley and shaft splines. The red dust is powdered metal. My shaft, bearings and pulley all had to be replaced. There are several excellent threads on the topic.

CHECK the belt tension and use the 'slacker' setting. Tight belts, which Dealers seem to like so much, do some costly damage.

I agree with Mr Wilson , take the pulley off and check for wear on the shaft splines and pulley. If the wear is minimum get a new lock washer and some red locktite. Clean everything good and re install with locktite and 125 lbs of torque.

Whoaa - if you use any red loctite you'll have to use heat to remove it. If you use loctite at all, use Blue 243 on a clean dry thread. Frankly the service manual doesn't recommend loctite for this particular nut however from a few years of group experience, well, use it anyway.

I have remove the pulley after red locktite a couple of times with a little heat and a big torque wrench with no trouble. You want it to stay and not come loose.

I'm surprised there is no recall on these?

    Re: red dust

If the bike is under warranty then replace all the rotating parts of the middle shaft else read my reply here:http://www.rswarrior.com/forums/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=21669

There should be practically no RADIAL MOVEMENT between the shaft & pulley splines. The RED DUST is metal that is most likely from the middle shaft 1st because it is softer than the stock pulley.

If caught in time a new middle shaft only will solve the problem although there are many members here that just retorqued the pulley nut using red thd lock and 110-125 ft~lbs

    Good luck

I've got my middle drive gear all apart right now for this problem.  I got to the point that the pulley, shaft, and the bearing need to be replaced.  Just ordered the parts today.  Yamaha should definitely step up with a recall on this problem.  It seems to have afflicted a whole lot of bikes, and sure seems like a safety issue to me.  Has anybody had any success getting Yamaha to reimburse for repairs outside of warranty?

Surprise [:O] Red dust - Heads Up

Keep in mind the Red Dust is the tail-tale from (2) dissimilar Ferrous alloys and/or differing hardness and represents the metal fatigue!

An aluminum front pulley will not exhibit the red dust Hmm
