Here's how to do it.. TYhe link above makes it easy
do you want to save a few bucks while you wait for some more mods to be done?
There have been a lot of questions about the ECU and what can be done with it. This much I can say with certainity. The ECU can do far more than any single componant on the bike and the ability to manipulate it remains vastly untapped.
You will find on this site, instructions to adjust the settings when you add aftermarked air or exhaust. The thing you won't find is an exact science. What you get is the basics and it requires you to figure out the rest. If you get nervous easy, relax. If you write down the original settings before you start messing around, you can always put everything back to original settings. People ask me where they should start and to be honest, that's another huge variable but it's safe to move the ECU settings in increments of two (2) or more before riding and checking. Is the ECU a replacement for the PCIII or similar? nope. But it is a way to "get by" until you have the modifications you think you'll stick with to make the PCIII and a custom map worth the price.
Go ahead and play with the ECU, there is a lot going on there. As well as the ability to change some settings, it will give you a wide range of diagnostics. Take a look, it's an impressive piece of hardware.<br
This adjustment is cake. It's cheap, easy and not nearly as scary as lots of people think the first time they try it. You can litterally screw around all day with the ECU settings and if you remember where you started, put it back, no harm, no foul. Do NOT be intimidated, it's really simple and you will see how simple the first time you try it.
Here is how it works, if you have any problems, wing it, it's not like you're going to hurt anything. Remember though, you have to pull and ground a wire before you start and you have to plug the ECU back in before you can adjust anything. I make mention of this because I have gotten more than one person that forgot to plug the ECU back in after grounding wire #27 and couldn't figure out why it didn't do anything. I have also been contacted by people that forgot to plug wide #27 back in when they were done. Only once did somebody forget to reconnect the battery.
Locating the ECU for larger pictures, click on the small pictures
The Ecu is located under the seat, remove and locate the ECU
Using Screwdriver, lift the latch on the ECU and pull the ECU apart
Locate wires #27 and #29, should be yellow and orange, the numbers are on the side of the ECU. This is the ECU loop. If you look closely at the side of the ECU, you will see numbers that tell you what wires we're talking about here.
Wires #27 and #29 complete the ECU loop, for adjusting the ECU, you will only need worry about #27
If you turn the ecu wiring clip over, you will see three securing tabs, you can press these in to allow the wires to pull from clip.
After pushing in white tab, you can at this point pull any wire loose in that segment of wires. Push the clip back when #27 is extracted from clip.
Using aligator clips attached to a length of wire, ground #27 wire to frame.
Ground #27 wire to frame and plug the ECU back in.
Hold both buttons and turn on bike. Continue to hold buttons down until the diag message appears.
After 8 seconds you should see the diag come up on your screen.
Push left button and CO should come up on your screen.
Push both buttons again and co:01 will appear on your screen
Push both buttons again and a number will appear below the co:01
At this point, you can adjust the numbers up and down by using the buttons. When you have moved the numbers whatever number you like, put everything back the same way you took it appart and test it out.
The only way to check the adjustment is to ride and check plugs and readjust as needed. This is very simple once you have done it once. There is no need to fear experimentation as you can't really screw up much< I have heard that you can fry the ECU if you don't pull the power but I have never had this happen. Be dilligent, write down your starting point so you can go back if you feel like it. The settings of this is not much more complicated than setting a digital clock (once you get to the point where you can actually do an adjustment). Now, the first time I tried it, I just pushed buttons randomly until I finally got to a place where I could actually make a change. That works too.
