Flashing Fuel low light - fixed PG1

Just came home from dinner with a sweet little thing and my fuel low light started flashing. It flashed 8 times then went out for 4 secondes then repeated again. The bike functioned normally all the way home and there was plenty of gas in the tank. No kinks in the fuel lines from the tank to the sump tank.

Any ideas what this could be?

UPDATE - Well, after pulling the fuel pump I rechecked the wiring diagram and traced the wires coming from the fuel level sensor. Black leads to ground and green leads to the tach (like everything else)by way of the headlight. Turns out that vibration took it's toll on the green wire inside the headlamp housing and shot the resistance to infinity, thereby producing the fuel level error.

Wrapped the wire and presto-chango! Error is gone & I'm baacckkk!!

    Yep.

    From the 2005 manual.

"This model is also equipped with a self diagnosis device for the fuel level detection circuit. If the fuel level detection circuit is defective, the following cycle will be repeated until the malfunction is corrected: The fuel level warning light will flash eight times, the go off for 2.5 seconds. If this occurs, have a Yamaha dealer check the vehicle." Section 3-2

Thanks man! Gives me a place to start looking...Guess I'll be taking the fuel system apart in the morning. That sweet thang will be here soon so my ride will have to wait till the sun comes up. I'm sure the bike will understand...

Enough of that "sweet thang" without pics. [:D] Same goes for "sweet thangs" as it does for mods. [;)]

Last time I put up one of my "sweet thangs", Darkstar told me it was too much & erased it...What's a fellow to do?

Yep. Sure is. Ok, so, getting back on topic...Anyone want to hazard a guess as to the location of the fuel level detection circuit or the fuel level sensor?

Maybe check the connectior on top of the reserve tank. There are 4 wires, the red/blue & one black are for the fuel pump, Just a guess but I think the other 2 are for the low fuel light. Headed to the shop now & will take a look at the manual for ya.

I'll keep the pooper-scooper here. (private joke)

I've unplugged the fuel pump and the error is still there. Doesn't really tell me anything cause that would create a fault in the fuel level detection circuit. The '02 shop manual say's absolutely nuttin about this error. Hope it's not the fuel pump. They are going for: 5PX-13907-00-00 $472.90. Ouch! Gonna open the sump tank & see if it's low next.
