Re: Model Year Differences 2002-2009 (Update Marker)

Jarv.....Sorry to detract from the thread slightly - - just wondered. I also bought a headlight from a US member recently ...and I now need to drill a hole for a pilot bulb which obviously doesn't exist in the US version. The official UK model had one as standard. (Mine was drilled when I bought the bike - - I could tell because the headlight was full of fine powder/filings which I was never able to fully remove!

Just remembered this Jarv. The lens for the headlight on foreign vehicles are not compatable for the UK. On dip they are focused to the right. M.O.T. failure Jarv. Sorry bud.

    No worries Gav.

The USA (U49) and CAN throttle bodies are ID Marked XV1700PC-5PX1-00).  The CAL (California) throttle bodies are ID Marked XV1700PC-5PX2-10) (maybe to accept the smog system charcoal cannister).  Thses ID Mark numbers are not changed in the 2003 or the 2006 (newest) Service Manual Supplement.  But the replacement part numbers change:

    • 2002-2005 USA-CAN = 5PX-13750-00-00
    • 2002-2005 CAL = 5PX-13750-10-00
    • 2006-2007 USA-CAN = 5PX-13750-01-00
    • 2006-2007 CAL = 5PX-13750-11-00
    • 2008-2009 USA-CAN = 5PX-13750-02-00
    • 2008-2009 CAL = 5PX-13750-12-00

I have no way to determine if either throttle body has actually changed.  It could be handy to know if you are buying or selling parts from a parted-out bike.

The time is coming, I'll start working on this update next week.  Hopefully all our UK / EU guys have discovered more differences.  I was hoping to hear from some 2009 owners on any differences.  Anyway, if anyone has more goodies to add to Model Year Differences, please chime in soon!

    Re: Model Year Differences 2002-2009

ok mike - sunday wet to the park at greenwich with jarv and when i tried his clutch lever it needed brute force to pull it!!.. 2 differences i noticed his 2005 or is it 06 anyways has the engine end lever notched further in and the spring underneath is much thicker...than my 03 which is also notched nearer 90 degrees see photos - my lever is much much easier to pull - what is this?

the last pic is jarv's thicker cable - different angle and much thicker spring underneath? - cheers tom

    Dunno let's ask him!

From his Gallery he has + 4” Venhill engineering clutch and throttle cables.  But I don't see a Barnett SR2.  Maybe the heavy feel of the clutch lever is a combination of the heavier lever-spring (which I have not heard about before) and the +4" cable giving 4" more drag, plus possibly the lever-angle was moved from stock to help accomodate the +4" clutch cable, putting it beyond the correct angle (which would add the feel of weight also).

But its just a guess.  Maybe he has an SR2 and its just not listed?

I'm interested in the heavier clutch lever spring, maybe Jarv will chime-in?

i did!![stoney ground]...and he's off to scotland tomorrow...he's just always lived with it...i thought i took a pic of the springs but doh...i'll measure the thickness of mine my spring, and get him to do the same when he meets up with Gav next weekend...thunder in the glen...now that's a meeting name to conjure with..he does have a mod cable but forgotten which one....i agree i think his lever is out of position but then thought it might be a year difference...but as yousay maybe it has something to do with the length of that cable meeting the lever...this maybe a a difference...[straw pulling] but as i know you love these cunumdrums!! Big Smile and we appreciate the fact that you do!! -you're ears must have been burning yesterday!

ps - he has bones 'yami cowl' which i can have.... but...... no fixings!! so i'm going to be searching for more 'bolts' mike....i saw you duck!!Wink

    CHIME CHIME!  Big Smile

Mike - here are my facts:

My bike is an 06 midnight. I got it brand new.

I believe it is a CalIfornia spec (?) because it had a "collector" on the bottom of the front left frame, where all the vent pipes and other spaghetti was gathered.

The cable IS a Venill Eng 4" over.

I sent them my stock cable and they replicated all the bends, adjusters...etc..except it is 4" longer - and black.

The lever on the clutch assey has never been moved from the day I got the bike.

I am fully aware of the pro's and con's of moving the arm on the spline but.....

I simply hooked up the new cable - and bingo!

The "run" of the cable is good, the angle of the pull, relative to the arm looks fine to me.

I have never really felt that the drag on the cable was anything other than "average"

The return spring is definately thicker / heavier than Tom's 03.

I would guess that the spring size is the difference between the models -

I don't suppose there are stronger clutch springs internally - - - unless I have one of those strange upgraded bikes---- ?

Looking at this chart at the bottom is it correct with the dry weights?  Why is the weight increased on' 07 and up?

Back then I couldn't find a reason for it either, so I guessed it was probably either an error, or more likely just a factory correction.  But candidly I didn't know why the weight increased that little bit when there were no significant equipment changes for those model years.  Behind the scenes my guess was the battery weight changed because in 2007/2008 the Yuasa battery MIGHT HAVE grown to a larger CCA battery (from 135CCA to 210CCA I think - without going back to look).  That could add 5 or 6 pounds.  But again, I truly don't know.

Re: Model Year Differences 2002 to 2009

Spied Jarvs clutch today. The inside of his cable is definitely thicker than an 03, his is an 06. His cable has a 45 degree bend at the bars, 03 is straight. Both 03 & 06 springs for the spindle lever down at the clutch casing are the same thickness Tom.

I'd say (have to be very careful how I word this) the strength of pull on both levers are about the same. Phew....

too quick with that...'phew' there me hearty....it's the plank for you...as it happens then you're clutch is also a bugger to pull...'cause when i near broke my wrist on jarv's, we both tried mine against his and mine clutch is as smooth as smooth can be..half the weight needed to pull back.....interesting the spring is the same size....his angle of the dangle on the engine end was it the same as yours by chance did you notice ..??
