    URGENT! Stock Chrome Rear Pulley/Sprocket

Just posting this up out of concern for any Warrior Rider's who have had their rear pulley or as Yamaha labels it "the drive sprocket" chromed or did a chrome exchange. The pictures are off a chrome exchange rear pulley/sprocket for a 2002 Warrior. I always thought that the rear pulley/sprocket was a single molded pulley/sprocket. I never knew it was a 2 piece rear pulley. The pulley section with the 70T and the other section I am going to call it a inner retaining ring for the belt. This part separates from the main pulley/sprocket as you will see in the pictures provided below and is held in place by 6 very small allen head bolts.

My determination along with 2 others present have come up with the possible scenarios of this near miss and need to put this out here for you folks to inspect their rear sprockets ASAP.

    1) Only 1 allen head bolt was replaced after chroming when both parts were mated together.

    or

    2) The other 5 allen head bolts were never tight and fell out after being mated together and or no lock tite was used.

After inspecting the rear sprocket upon disassembly I noticed that the other 5 allen bolt holes were never re-tapped after chroming, thus leading me to speculating that the bolts were never installed after chrome.

BTW, this happened at highway speeds exceeding +80 mph.

This picture shows what happened to the ring where the 1 bolt was securely attached. It ripped right through the inner retaining ring and than separated from the actual pulley/sprocket.

The next 2 pictures shows what the ring looked like right after we pulled off the highway in the break down lane.

This is a picture from the brake side of the rear tire. Note the 1 allen head bolt still present and 1 other hole with no bolt present.

After we cut off the retaining ring off the bike.

This is not about a lawsuit. No one was hurt. Yes, it could have been a lot worse. This is about having folks who have dealt with chrome exchange or had their rear sprocket chromed to inspect those allen head bolts ASAP!

Had the same scenerio only i was hopping around town and had the benie on it started like a rattle and at the next light i'm looking all over so i pulled over and start checking everthing and like you were saying one bolt was missing and they were all loose. If i had the full face on and cruising down the highway there would of been the same conclusion i bet.Put the blue loc-tite on and haven't had a problem since. This all happened right after the shop installed my 240 chromed so some thing to check and blue

That could have been real bad like locking up the rear wheel and crashing. Man it's always something eh.

It was not I. It was a fellow Warrior Rider I was riding with today. I just happened to have a camera and an extra rear pulley at home and a used panther drive belt since his belt got all torn up in the process too.

Now that I have looked at the pics closer I see it's not your ride. Big whoops on the chrome exchange.

Yes, the thought went through our heads too. Especially, since 2 of the three us were in the process of re-confirming our 130 mph Club Status.....and I am not laughing, cause the Warrior this happened too was right up around 120 mph pulling up the rear when he felt something quite not right with his Warrior.....and he disappeared in my rearview.....

Only problem with those bolts Jimmy is they are pretty much out of sight....being on the back side of the sprocket and they are very small.

Good tip for sure. That is another feature of this site. Glad he felt that not quite right feeling and backed off. Had he kept going it could have been a disaster.

Wow, I'm glad to hear there wasn't another rear wheel lock up at excessive speeds! I know from experience that is not fun! So, I guess your not going to tell us who's bike it happened to and/or who did the chrome exchange? I guess it's just fair enough knowing just to check your pulley nuts?
