The White House has followed the lead of Texas and lower their flag to half mast at 11:14 this morning.

Seems like that would have been an automatic everywhere, not just Texas.  Is that just me?

If not automatic, you would think that would have been brought up by our Commander in Chief yest. O wait, he was to busy givin a shout out to his buddy and recieving applause. Such a easy thing to let slip by. We shouldnt hold it against him, at least he is trying to be our PresidentAngry

Finally got a chance to see it, watched it twice actually. I can't believe he prefaced his speech with "shout-outs". As for the rest of his speech, it did not matter what he said, it was already tainted by his MTV styled TRL: "I'd like the thank.....", F'n unbelievable.

And on top of all else mentioned here that he did wrong, he doesn't know the difference apparently between the Congressional Medal Of Honor, and the Congressional Medal Of Freedom when he was the one that awarded the Freedom Medal. To be that oblivious to the difference and mistaking one for the other is nothing less that shameful. He has nothing but distrust and disdain for the military- which is why he wants his civilian security force - equipped as well as the military, to help keep the military in check. Shameful, simply shameful. 2012 isn't coming nearly fast enough to suit me. Ride Safe.

I know he had to add this to an already prepared speech but wouldn't he still have someone to do this for him or at least give him guidance?

I was stunned at the "shout out". The whole thing was surreal and disconnected. I don't even know what to say, or pretend to know what was running through his head.

He was obviously there for a conference.  The fact that he had to break news, the details of which were spotty at best was an aside.  It isn't like he sat reading "The Baby Goat" while our nation was under attack.  Had he have led off with the shooting he had little information about, Faux would have criticized him for neglecting the Indian's conference to play journalist.  It's no win with those jackasses.  Wake up already.

Tilted, can you watch it here?

Just a red X while I'm on the Company's network, they even blocked me on my company provided Blackberry.

It's bad, but only in the sense that there's really no "good" way to interrupt an event like the TNC with news of a shooting, especially when details are still fuzzy.  It's certainly not "frightening".

Ok, mark this one down in History. But I have to 100% agree with Damon. he has to close the Tribal Nations Conference, during which he has to give "his take" on the shootings. that is a lose/lose for whomever was at the podium. I didn't vote for Obama, but I can't knock on him for this one either.

    +1

You guys who are trying to tar Obama are really reaching on this one. This speech isn't indicitve of anything good/bad about the man.  He said what needed to be said considering all of the facts weren't known at the time of the speech.

Is that Bush bashing?  From a Obama supporter?

Moving parts in rubbing contact require lubrication to avoid excessive wear. Honorifics and formal politeness provide lubrication where people rub together. Often the very young, the untraveled, the naive, the unsophisticated deplore these formalities as "empty," "meaningless," or "dishonest," and scorn to use them. No matter how "pure" their motives, they thereby throw sand into machinery that does not work too well at best.

siradude I actually don't know if that was the book and I can't see if you included a picture (limits on my company system I think..) but it was my own example of (hated by so many) Goerge W. Bush being caught in what I see as a real no win situation, where he either lets the secret service evac him, scare the kids and looks like a running coward to the world or he finishes the childrens story.  I think saddlebagus was probably really proud of the great defense he'd thought of for Obama but I don't think that our current president handled a much smaller scale attack (not saying Terrorist attack by the way) even half as well as GW initially handled the news of 911.

No, when our country is under attack, a president need not be worried about photo ops or upseting a handful of children, he needs to take command not sit around and wait for someone to tell him what to do next.  Obama OTOH, was not in a situation that required command control.  The fact he even commented about the shooting before he had the facts shows a bit of stupidity on his part considering the last time he commented about a certain cop before having all the facts it made him look pretty ideological and impulsive.  Though this role was more reporter than commentator.
