    Went Drag Racing

Well, I didn't race but I took some bitchin pictures of the guys running their bikes. Sam's bike did a beautiful 10.21 1/4 mile and the boys held their own, doing nice clean 12.6 runs. I had the opportunity to stand anywhere in the track and try to get some photos of the Warriors and some of the other dudes who ran their bikes at the local drag strip, here in Orlando.

    Enjoy the pictures!

that black Warrior is Sam's - It's seen the business end of a 9 second 1/4 mile run in its days. If you notice, he's also got an R1 swingarm with right hand side chain drive on it.  That bike's all business!  The pictures almost do it no justice.

Thanks Justice!  I'm still learning a lot and doing a lot of experimenting.

    Re: Went Drag Racing

Shawn is a great photographer.  I appreciate the beautiful shots he took of the nitrous Warrior.  Regarding the color, I actually had/have all the paint in hand to shoot it the F-1 Mercedes Silver with black and red trim.  After shooting the black urethane primer-sealer, I got lazy and in a hurry to get it out to the track, so I didn't continue with the color and left it as is.  So far, it's gotten a lot of compliments but, who knows, tomorrow's another day.

I'm still in the process of dialing in the new nitrous system.  There are some electrical glitches that are causing the controller to turn off intermittently during the runs.  I believe it is the crappy tach signal messing up the window switch.  I'm using a Wizard of Nitrous system from the UK with a Schnitz controller set to ramp up to 70 horse from 30 in a half second during each gear.  I'm getting a full monte computer management system from the same outfit that will allow me to have separate settings for each gear, and will also have other features like AFR closed loop nitrous tuning, offsets, frequency adjustments for the solenoids, etc.  I'm working directly with the owner of the company who is building me the unit features to meet my needs.  I will be eventually running up to 130 horse of nitrous on top of the 100 (Rear wheel) engine horsepower, and will need to control it carefully.  The progressive system along with the timing control and E85 fuel are going to really make some numbers when I get it dialed in.  Again, I'm making almost nines at over 130 mph with only 70 horsepower not even working all the time.  Stay tuned.

       Hey Sam,

nice looking bike there and nice work you are doing. Just wondering if you could give a quick rundown on what, if anything, you did to be E85 compatible?

    Thanks in advance!!

    Re: Went Drag Racing

Thanks for the compliments.   I am running E85 mainly for the high octane and much lower price compared to racing fuels.  Plus, I found that leaded fuel causes valve sticking on my engine.  It does have some other advantages, including the ability to absorb a lot of heat and increase the charge density, but, at least for street driving, this can prove to be a liability.

    Couple of observations:

    1. I have had no issues with compatibility with any of my components, including the factory dry-break connectors, orings and injectors.  I did, however, replace the fuel system with an inline Mallory pump and regulator that are methanol compatible, and also use an under seat aluminum fuel tank.  I understand from others who use Walbro type pumps like ours that they have had no problems with the fuel either.  What I am not sure of is whether the differences in dielectric property of the two fuels would be an issue from the standpoint of ignitibility hazard of the fuel vapor.  Many guys are running in-tank pumps with E85 with no issues, but I can't comment on the Warrior or other in tank bike applications since I am running an external pump.
    2. The fuel system needs to provide 30 to 40% more fuel because the E85 runs a lot richer than gasoline.  That means bigger pump and injectors.  To tune properly, you really need to invest in some dyno time.
    3. Even using Speedstar pistons, the 10.25:1 compression isn't high enough to vaporize the fuel readily, so it tends to stumble at low rpms when snapping he throttle, and can take awhile to warm up at low temperatures.  I ordered a set of 14:1 pistons from Orient Express that I hope to install next time I tear the engine down.
    4. You will need to change the oil a lot more often due to fuel dilution.  The alcohol fuels, particularly during start up, tend to washdown the cylinders and get into the oil, knocking back it's viscosity somewhat.  I use Amsoil 60 super heavy weight racing oil and change it every few weeks.
    5. Availability of the fuel is limited, particularly in my area.  Since I'm only racing, I drive to the tollway station and fill up 4 five gallon cans which last me for a few months

All that being said, unless you have good availability of the fuel, live in warmer climates, spend the money on upgrading the fuel system and electronics to manage it, and drive in a fairly limited fashion, don't bother.  It's really not worth it.
