    Open face helmet

G'day gents, As the summer approaches I started to use my open face more often and I quickly rememberedhow much I hate it. It's one of these cheepo matte black mushroomy types, that acts like a parachute at 120 and wants to strangle you.

I see alot of chopper riders wearing a low-profile (less foam/styro) helmets, problem is they're not legal, that doesn't bother me as my exhaust or the lack of it isn't legal either, but problem is you can't just go to the shop and buy them.

So question to Fuzz and Scott (cuz I've seen that you guys have what I want) where do I go ?

I see some on ebay but they're advertised as scooter helmets, don't think that's what I want...

    Anyone?

PS Fuzz, where did you get these stickers again?

    G'day Matt,

The best place to get them is at bike shows.  There is a place on the Gold Coast called XXX Rated that makes them.  They are fibreglass and reasonably heavy but not overly so.  you will need to be there to try them on as they vary slightly from one  to the other.

There are about 5 - 6 different styles, or there might even be more now, some with only subtle differences between them.  Again, need to be there and try them  on.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers

    Hey Matt,

Try the custom bike shops that sell a lot of merchandise. There is a few up here, but as Hans said you really need to try them on.

I saw a few pisspots in a Yamaha dealer in Lilydale a couple of months ago, and queried the legality, and he said they where fine.

I didnt check for stickers. They where only about 90 bucks. I'll check them out in a week or so if you want.

If that's not a problem Paul, that'd be great. I'll check some local shops too.

Sounds like you are looking for a "novelty" helmet.  Or a Skid Lid

I know that Skid Lid makes a DOT approved helmet for here in the States.  Not sure what you guys require down there.  Hope this helps a little.

I got mine from 'Johnny Hogs' in Hoppers Crossing on my side of town. There is a shop in Elizabeth St. in the city but I forget exactly where. The HD dealer will be able to point you in the right direction.

The lid I'm using doesn't meet Australian Standards and in therefore illegal. The only way to go if you want an open facer that doesn't make you look like a chuppa chup.

Turns out XRated have their stuff in a few locations in MElbs, so for those out there looking, CNC in Dandenong, Wild Rhino in Hoppers Crossing and Doc Hogs. They got one that looks like a german helmet that is legal.

     german

    and the usual stuff:

    Re: Open face helmet

If you open face is acting like a parachute then it may be because it is not fitting well enough.

No matter what type open face you wear it will pull at high speeds but if it fits correctly and done up tight enough it won't be an issue.

I wear an open face all year round and only have problems when they get old and start becoming a little loose fitting. It's my way of knowing that it is time for a new one.

If you are going to be going REAL fast then I would advise you just stick to the fullface.

Once upon a time I felt like buying a Harley Davidson.
That feeling faded with the sunburn on my neck.
