    Tachometer is not working..

This is the deal. I bought a factory RPM\Milage tach used from a Store on Ebay for $300. Well i received it about a week ago and i have been painting my tins and polishing my rims so when i finally got around to hooking up the tach the battery was dead. I charged up the battery , hooked up the tach and fired up the bike. Well the speedometer tach lights up but the tach i just spend $300 bucks doesnt turn on. I have checked all the fuses and checked all the wires coming from the tach to the ECU and  none of the wires appear to be damaged or cut. I dont see any fuses on the tach its self. The tach doesnt smell likes its been fried and i dont see any obvious water damage. I sent the guy an email this morning so i havent heard back from him yet. I am hoping this is something that i can resolve myself and that the tach itself is fine. I'd really hate to send the tach back and look like an ass when the guy tests it out and it works. I dont know anyone else that owns a warrior so that i could just hook it up to their bike and be 100% percent sure that the tach is faulty.Well guys if anyone can give me some advice on where to look and how to troubleshoot that would be a big help. If there is anyone in Houston or in the surrounding areas with a warrior that would be willing to help me test the tach that would be awesome too.

Where is your original tach?  Wild guess here, you bought it used and there was no tach?  If that's the case can you contact the original owner and ask why the tach was taken off?

Similar problem with me. Well dead battery at least. I took my tach off to change the LED's out blue to red and went to hook it back up and dead battery. Made no sense cause i had everything on the bike unplugged except the battery. O well it held a charge. But if you feel confident pull your tach apart and there is a white strip on the bottom with what looks like a black line running thru it. It is rubber. The black strip is the contact strip for the RPM clock and odometer. The LED's only illuminate the back round color they have nothing to do with the the numbers and bars that move according to your RPM speed. Try cleaning that white piece with a pencil eraser and make sure everything is making good contact. Also make sure the board itself is clean. You will see the big strip at the bottom that the white piece makes contact with.

I don't know if you bought your bike new or used so forgive me for making a wider range of guesses than necessary.  This is a risky topic because its always possible the used part is dead and should be returned if possible (ebay has a program).  Did you buy your bike used and without an installed tach?  If yes, its equally possible the prior owner removed the tach for 'the clean look' and rewired to accomodate that.  If you bought your bike with a tach installed that wasn't working,  it seems the problem might instead be in the bike's wiring.  It faster if this sort of troubleshooting is done by someone already knowing what should exist and how to test.  It sounds to me like you know what you are doing, and probably you already suspect a solution, but for us on the outside there's not enough info posted to know how to help and its risky if we try.  For example, since even the gauge face lights fail to illuminate, there's still two possibilities: the bike was rewired by the prior owner, or the whole ebay tach was fried and sold to you in that conditon.  If you have a few resistors laying around, or go to radio shack for them, you can test the led's from your battery.

Here are two links from the Popular Mods post (in the technical forum) that will help:

    Lights - LED How-To:
             1. http://www.instructables.com/id/LEDs-for-Beginners
             2. http://led.linear1.org/1led.wiz

The second link is new and sizes a resistor to a single LED bulb.  There is a link near the top for multiple LED's.  I haven't had the tach apart so I don't know if the LED's have their own built-in resistance, or not, so I don't know what info to enter into the calculator boxes.  If someone were to post that info it would be helpful to many others in the future Yes.

I purchased the bike used from an auction so i dont know who the previous owner was. I dont think he removed the tach for a clean look because the mounting tabs are still there. The bike ran great when i brought it home.(I rode for about a week then took it apart for paint and polishing)  The guy that i purchased the Tach from said he got it from a Yamaha Dealer i am assuming that he did not test it when he purchsed it cause he could not tell me what color the LEDs were when i asked. The only rewiring on the bike is the wiring that was done when the PC3 was installed by the previous owner.  To sum it up the bike runs great its just the tach that appears to be dead...

    • I'm a little confused by the Hi-lighted statement ....
      • I'm assuming that nothing works at all on the tachometer including the back lighting?

avillalobos .... if you have the cojones and brain power to take apart the tach then i expect you should be able to read and follow the enclosed Warrior wiring diagram hosted here: http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/1/1/1673654/Warrior/Warrior%20Schematic.pdf

There are 3-sources of +12v power to the tach assy (33) that can be easily recognized on the diagram and tested.

    1. Red/Green wire - Odometer & Clock fuse (5)
    2. Brown wire - Signal fuse circuit (68)
    3. Blue wire - Frt running light feed from the Headlight fuse (66)

The Black HARD WIRED GRND is common to all 3-wires so you will want to check this too! It's possible that this particular Grnd connects to a common bus in the headlight housing.

The Tach light (35) is depicted as an LED and powered by the Brown wire of the Signal circuit which can be identified in the Hitachi 4-pin connector. I would suggest you pick-up some male/female PIN connectors (.110" wide i think) and make up some proper pigtails for testing purposes to prevent shorting out the assy and other components.

BTW, i don't have the cojones or desire to open my Tach though i do have the brain power that i use in other areas Smile

    Good Luck

    Re: Tachometer is not working..

Thanks for the diagram Alan i know its is going to come in handy. I got my bike back together today (new paint and polished rims) I  cant get this grin off my face LOL. Now with the bike back together i had a chance to ride it today. The tachometer is still deadno lights, no lcd. the speedometer lon the other hand ights up, neautral light comes on, turning signals come on, high beam comes but the actual speedometer does not work. I was hauling some tail in 5th gear and the speedmeter just read zero.  Honestly, i just walked back in the house so i havent checked the fuses since last time but last time i looked they were fine. Last just say the fuses are not blown, any idea what i could do to get this working?  Lonestar Rally in galveston, tx next weekend so id really like to know how fast i am going. Thanks for the help!

(((Still Grinning))) I love riding this bike!!!

    • NO TACHI ...NO SPEEDO Sad ... if your fuses are OK you need to revisit my earlier suggestions and trouble shoot the electrical system as suggested. This will require getting into the trenches and doing some hand to hand combat to verify the Tach you purchased is ok. As i stated earlier, there is a hardwired GRND that is common to the tach and runs directly back to the battery connections as shown on the wiring diagram. Good Luck & BTW i'm not selling anything here .. good bye
