    Scandinavia tour 2011?

Something that 'Oldman' said got me thinking... Would it be possible to set up a warrior tour in scandinavia and have this bike meeting. I dont know anything about shipping rates, so does anybody have any clue how much would it cost to ship a container full of warriors to, let's say Oslo, Norway. From there drive to north of Norway, cross the border to Sweden, and finally ride south thru Finland. just a thought, but pretty cool one If you ask me! =)

As to shipping the guys from across the pondCool...now that would be the event of warrior events...oh yesSurprise....can't help with that one...Big Smile

Hate to break this one out to you Tomba, but the northern lights *usually* only appear in winter time. So no luck in july, mainly cos' the sun wont set at all...

But I assure you, to experince lapland in summer time is as good as winter time. Minus the mosquitos, and other bugs.

But it's quite odd when the sun stay above the horizon even in night time... So remember to bring your sunglases... Cool

Oh what a beautiful trip that would be!  I have no idea what it would cost to ship a bike over there.  Way back in 1993 I shipped a Chevy Astro van to Iceland. That was $1800.00  one way.  I guess I need to check on round trip shipping for a bike.

Tomba, I ment that in summer time lapland is filled with those kamikaze bugs! Big Smile

A can/pint (0,56l) of lager bought from super market costs about 3.50euros, so it's not that much.

I even know a bar, that serve's a half a liter class of beer at 1 euro. Big Smile

Oldman, If you have the time to look into this that would be great. I can do some arrangements in this end if it comes to that, hopefully it does.

I dont think that container filled with bikes would cost that much per person, but in the end its not free, that's for sure.

I sincerely hope that from this conversation, there would born a bike meeting of a century... Smile

I have requests in with two different companies now, just waiting on them to get back to me.  Guys from the states would have to arrange for insurance also.  I don't know of any stateside policies that will cover Europe.  Zalama,  what about vehicle inspections?  I know Iceland required all vehicles go through their inspection process and could not be used until they passed.  That was for vehicles that were going to be there for an extended time.  I don't know how tourist vehicles were handled.  Do you know anything about the process for Norway - Finland?

Shipping would probbably be cheaper if we all went in on an ocean liner and floated it over ourselves. Aside from outrageous cost of getting over there, a scandinavian tour sounds like fun in this Norwegian's ears... as long as I don't have to eat any lutefisk.

Try the Icelandic rotten shark sometime.  It makes lutefisk seem very mild!

They bury it and literally let it rot.  It's eaten, by the men, during a festival in Feb I think it is.  I walked into an off-road shop one day and they called me into the back to try some.  I thought they were my friends until they did that.  OMG that was horrible.

Oldman, I dont know for sure, but I doubt that would be any issue here. Since you're tourists, and not staying.

I drove my car to Macedonia thru europe in 2001, and back again in 2002, and there was no need of inspection anywhere. But like I said, I dont know about Norway or Sweden, but for Finland I'm pretty sure you dont need to do that.

I have a friend who works as a vehicle inspector right here in Tampere, I'll ask him to be sure and get back to you on that one.

And what comes to eating fish... no... It's all meat! Well, after crossin Finnish border, that is. Try the reindeer! Rudolf got owned! Big Smile

    Re: Scandinivia tour 2011?

Reindeer, or caribou as we call them here, are good for sausage and that's about it.  The back strap is good if it's same day fresh.  Hell, it's so bad my dogs wouldn't even touch the bones!

I checked with two transport companies, only one has answered.  I had to fill out a form on line, they sent me an email with a quote.  I replied to the email and told the guy I wanted the price for a container to Oslo and a return from Helsinki.  He has not come back with the prices yet but did say it would be cheaper than the individual cost.  The 20ft container will hold about 6 bikes, the 40ft about 12.   When I shipped my van to Iceland it went from Norfolk, VA so that is what I put on the form.  The individual price he quoted was for them to pick up the bike in Norfolk but the ship actually goes out of New Jersey. So the price would be a bit lower if the bike was dropped off in NJ.  So, here is the one bike, one way quote from Norfolk, VA to NJ to Oslo.  One way, no return trip.

The door to ocean port cost is $1400.00. The forwarder will need the original Title and a copy of the bill of sale. Ocean transit insurance is charged at $17 for each $1000 value with a $500 deductible plus a $70 insurance certificate fee. Transit time will normally run about 8-9 weeks

With a container the cost per bike will come down and the time should be shorter because we would have a full container for them to load.  If not full, it would possibly sit around for a while until they found enough other stuff to fill it.  Hopefully he'll get back to me tomorrow with the rest of the info.

What would it cost to rent a bike over there?

    Re: Scandinivia tour 2011?

They just got back to me.  Here is what I received:

For now….with fuel at the level it is now…. And you dropping off the bikes at the NJ forwarder warehouse, the cost to the ocean terminal at Oslo is:   Rate: $ 4100.00 for a 20ft container with 6-7 bikes  Rate: $ 5900.00 for a 40ft container with 12-13 bikes These are the rates going from the US to Europe. Coming back is normally close to 15% more.

So, 6 bikes with insurance and misc expenses should come in at or below $2,000 per bike round trip.  That's actually not too bad but I'd still like to see what is available to rent and what the cost would be.

    Re: Scandinivia tour 2011?

Ok, I'll look into that rental possibility.

I've also contacted my friend who works at DHL, and he promised me to look into transporting your bikes here and back.
