So im having the recall done now...

And the dealership just called and said that it is going to cost me around 80$ to have the HC pistons put in.   Is this outrageous?  I was under the impression that this would be free...

This is the transmission recall btw...

Its a respectable price. but outrageous because the engine is already apart. Its 2 circlips, slide out the wristpins and swap pistons at this point. They are charging you 1 hrs labor for 5mins extra work.

is that just the cost of the pistons or is it just labor ,i believe you have to buy the up grade pistons to do the h/c pistons so  if that is all you pay for pistons thats a heck of a deal , cant really say dont know the whole scoop on the job, cya btk572

I'd argue with them about it. Explain that if you knew they were going to charge you for that you would have taken it elsewhere and will reconsider where you have your work done in the future. If they feel that they need to charge you for it, let them know that  on the "rswarrior.com" website every member who's had this done during the recall weren't charged anything addtional and there isn't an addtional hour of work involved.
If they still insist on charging you I guess you'll need to pay it but I'd also let them know that you will be posting the dealership name on the website noting the charge so others can avoid them. This is BS!

    God first . . . . . . . . always!

I gave them the pistons.. This is just labor.   He said he had to "hone" some pin or some crap..

Re: So im having the recall done now...

Ok...  so i called him and told him that this is basically a 1 for 1 swap.   He explained to me that he is well known for working on fast bikes and that when HE puts the pistons in there are things that he does that other techs do not do...     He says that the pistons from factory, have "burrs" on them and that he takes the burrs off...   Should i have him cease and desist and call another dealer?

So the saga continues, i called the other location and asked if they had ever done a HC piston swap during a recall, the tech said no.   He said that there is additional work/charges because you do not have to take the pistons out during the recall....   Looks like i have to spend the 80 bucks.....

He also said that the tech is probably going to hone the cylinders..  I didnt think that was needed just for a piston swap....

I agree with Pep.  There are a lot of 02 and 03 Warriors running around with HC pistons.  I don't know of any who were charged for putting them in.  Tell him you want to watch to see what you are paying for.

When I had my 02 recall done they charged me to install the HC pistons as well but didnt for the roadstar 5th gear. But after a few problems with that stealership I have taken my buisness elsewhere. So its not uncommon just dont buy into the crap of "special" things he does when others dont they just want to make money anyway they can even if it is bull$#!*

you should go see what he is doing ,i run a shop and its mostly labor oriented in nature and there is no time the custom is not welcome to come ask ?s and see whats going on with their work thats called public relations and it shows you have nothing to hide and welcome the interest of the customer ,and when your customer is comfortable and happy, he /she will spend more freely and gain trust very quickly with you and your work ,its when they wont show you and dont want you there that you should worry, the old tale of the insurance regulations bullsh1t is just that old ,if you are talking and looking he isnt working so there should be no way to have any issues or injuries, right ? treat people as you want to be treated ,then treat people as they treat you! respect, a two way street dont ask for it if you dont give it! cya btk572

There is additional labor involved to gap the new piston rings if i'm not mistaken

I'm sold - my bad - I'm wrong!   It makes me wonder if the 108ci and 110ci kits that have bored-out jugs get a lining?

It seems honing the cylinders for a piston swap would always be a good idea.  It allows the new gapped rings to break-in on a smooth surface.  Ask if that is included and if it is, its worth the hour even if it only takes fifteen minutes.

I don't believe I've noticed new pistons with burrs on them.

I always thought that the cylinders has some kind of special coating like ceramic or something similar that couldn't be honed without destroying the coating. I could be wrong, but I seem to remember reading that something special had to be done when honing the stock cylinders. Anybody know for sure on this??
