If he ends up getting cleaned up completely - you should write all this down.  It might be the answer someone else needs to get over their addiction/ or a loved one.  Hope all stays on track.

    Re: Need some advise

I just read this Topic for the first time & there is no bad advice here. But I feel you are not out of trouble yet, It is a long road to recovery. Now more than ever be on top of the situation, your brothers head is still not clear & it will be easy for him to think that he can handle his problem on his own, (I doubt he can) Your doing a great job & your love for your brother shows. but dont slack off now. I have been there (not with H) & found it almost easy to stay clean for a month sometimes a year & then try it again. Go back & re read this entire topic for a refresher, might not hurt to let your brother read it too. Thoughts & prayers go out to you & your family. Best of luck to you all for dealing with a very difficult situation. Mike

Yes Outstanding.  Just don't let up.  I imagine an entire month of sobriety at this point seems like eternity but I'm sure it would still be incredibly easy for him to dive right back in at this point if anyone let's their guard down at all.  He's meeting the challenge but all it takes is that one challenging moment when he's at his weakest to start the whole cycle over again.  Major kudos to you and his friends and other family for their efforts and caring.

     Well said!

At this point at least with a head that is a little less foggy Matt's brother should be encouraged to get involved in and WORK a recovery program for relapse prevention. Relapse is obviously what we all "worry about" and try to prevent. But bottom line is unless the person with the addictions (ex. me with alcohol) gets involved and stays involved with a recovery program (like NA or AA or others) relapse is just a simple decision away.

Talking with others who share the same issues and are successfully in recovery today is KEY....he should get a sponsor ASAP and go to meetings.90 meetings in 90 days they say....and I know 1st hand it works.

He should be chasing recovery just as hard as he chased his drug of choice. I got up at 7:30am, and was at the local packy by 08:00 hours for my 1st 1/2 pint of the day (EVERYDAY!!!!) till the blackouts on the bike started. Today I have a sponsor, work 2 recovery programs and facilitate a 12 step study. I know I am just 1 shot away from runnin again....dam it i don't won't that to happen. Too much too loose!

I'm really hopeful for Matt's brother! and the last few replies are right on the money. he's at a critical juncture in his addictions and needs to be right on top of them or else!!!!....

Way to go Matt!, and you can tell your brother that Gary C says congrats and work hard at being sober and clean....and I mean WORK at it...

    He's coming, are you ready?

    Re: Need some advise

I am doing my best to keep him on a short leash. He is actually doing a good job of keeping himself in check. I need to tell you all something. After I first posted requesting help, my brother OD'd & had an accident. He was out getting his fix, shot up in a parkinglot, took off down the road & crashed. He is currently on a scared straight/things could have been worse kind of program. He was on a suicidal trip to nowhere. He sobered up enough to realize he could have taken someones life in the accident he started looking up and quit feeling sorry for himself. He understands that he has few options. He sobers up, or he goes to jail. He has court monday where he will get some sort of sentence. I pray that he gets probation with whatever time....jail or halfway house, he gets. He is scared to death of jail so constant drug testing will keep him from using. Understand guys, that I don't want simpathy for my brother. He has made his bed & realizes that I don't feel sorry for him. It is a great relief for me to be able to talk to you guys & get outside perspective. I truely appreciate all of you guys giving me some support on this.

Don't touch that please, your primitive intellect wouldn't understand alloys and compositions and things with... molecular structures.
