    wing rebuild or boat anchor?

starting to redo Dads &9 GL1000. Dirty but solid. New at posting pics soo....dads 79 wingpartswind jammerbox of partswater pump problem

Been parked since 2000 in ruff condition. I was going to part it out, but when I went to get it running to see what was what This thing fired up and purrrrred.

A little smoke from left pipe rolled the sticky throttle forward to idle and still purrrring. Amazing even the battery took charge. The water pump is bad local shop has one in stock pricey 158.00. Start with basic......maintaince first.

Maybe there is some life left in this old wing. Going back to stock with fairing and bags, but the parts bike is supposed to run also so we will see. Out of time what do you think? Waste of time or worth a try.

I say leave it raw and make a badass Bobber/bagger. It would be original and cool. Springer seat with some apes, and have some speakers put into those saddle bags, you'll be the coolest winger in town.

PROJECT BIKE...Rebuild that beast.  I'm still trying to buy this bike once the guy gets the title straight.  It's an 83 GL1100...started as a fully dressed aspencade.

Check this website if your not familiar, it will be TONS of help.  That water pump can be rebuilt and you'll find step by step/picture help on this site:

Will, you didn't quite get this into the correct forum.  This is General Discussion under the Warrior forums.  In the other thread I pointed you to General Bike Talk under the General Forums.  You didn't look far enough down on the page.  Maybe Sang will move this down. If not, what the hell, no biggie.

That's a Windjammer in the picture, made I believe by Craig Vetter. (Don't ask how I remembered that. Wish my short term memory was still that good.)  Haven't seen one of them in years.  They were all the rage in the early 70's.  I had one on my  Z1 B for a cross country trip in my 20's.  I doubt that it came stock on the Wing.

Please tell me you are going to install the John Deere mud flaps too. That would be soooo cool.Stick out tongue But seriously, cool project. I just got a friends 1980 GS650 going last night and it rides like a caddy. Bob the parts bike, that is one of the cooler bikes I have seen in a while.

Re: wing rebuild or boat anchor?

Leaps and bounds today. Installed new water pump, flushed and changed the oil. Put radiator back on, and filled. I done this while Dad cleaned on this thing all the time wanting to put wax on it. I keep repeated the same reply "you don't wax dirt". He was soo excited I couldn't help but to be excited also. So once the coolant system was filled and a walk through of what works what don't. I sent him down the street, No side panels or covers at all. Just as it looks in the first pic but a little cleaner. Grin from ear to ear. He comes back pushing it still grinning ear to ear. Clutch cable broke. Thats funny because that was next. Lube all cables. Oh well. He now has the itch bad. Way to soon in the project for that.

Ken thanks for the info I will need all I can get.

Oldman Thanks for setting me straight about location

Chief, Yes you are correct. The windjammer is a Vetter w/original quick connect and leather covers intac. The raido housing is there also.

Sorry no pics today I should of got one of him pushing it back. He would not get off the bike to push. He sat on the seat and short stepped it down the road over the floor boards. Funny stuff. He has not had a bike since 82 he has road some of mine but till the past few years they have been mostly Rockets. The look on his face to have his own bike again makes it worth it. Can anyone overnight me new cables? Joking

Re: wing rebuild or boat anchor?

Sounds like a good article fro one of the bike mags or even Reader's Digest.  You getting your dad back on 2 wheels, on his old bike, after 27 years. Take lots of good pix and good notes.  Also, I am pretty sure there is a forum out there for the old Wings. Should be lots of helpful info for you.

Just getting Dad back on 2 after 27years. This is his bike now but not his old bike. The last one he owned was an 78 or 79 Honda 750 DOHC. Sold it while stationed in Fort Knox, Ky in 1983. He has let many of his toys go for bad luck and or the responsible thing to do. He once had an 66 Chevy short bed fleetside. That is the first motor swap and basicly my intro into the world of mechanics. Sharp truck. Sold it in Indianapolis to move the family from Indy to French Lick, In. Well its about 9am Sat. lets start calling around for cables.

    I'll get some pics

     Good day all

P.S. He is talking about leaving it stripped down.

Fixing an old one up and getting it back on the road is way more fulfilling than just going and buying a new one. The knowledge you gain from actually wrenching on your own bike is priceless when troubleshooting future problems and the pride felt when someone compliments it is that much more intense.
