    Stretched gas tank for Warrior?

    Hi,

I plan to stretch my tank, so it looks like that:

I know this is a BMS bike and they can do it. Let me know what you think.

    Thanks.

    Sweet.

If I was to do anything to a gas thank, it would be to expand it for greater capacity.  But that's just me.

A good seat is around $700. I have a friend of mines who will do for me the custom seat, he will charge me cost price.

TECK, great choice. Are you going for the flush filler cap and doing away with the welded seam round the outside as well. Yes  ? Just make sure they put a bracket for bolting the tank to the frame at the seat area.

Re: Stretched gas tank for Warrior?

Gav, ya. I'm also having the popup cap done to it, so it looks like a custom tank. It is good you told me about the bracket, I will ask them if they reuse the stock bracket that is currently mounted to the tank. The popup cap will look like that (ignore the rounded tank end, mines will be pointed):

I decided to go with a pointed stretched tank because I wanted to match the rear fender I have done on my 280.
I'm a little concerned how the seat will get locked, since the pointed tank extension will cover the lock mechanism.
I will call Jared tomorrow and let you guys know...

    Teck,

I will give you this word of warning and then you can do with it what you will.

The pop-up gas caps vent around thier edges. Your paint will begin to flake after a year or two of this. I have never met anyone with one of them that didn't eventually regret it. I did alot of research on them a while bak and it is a re-occuring problem. Not to mention they have a habit of breaking after a while and won't come out. Then you are f'd in the middle of nowhere.  If you want a pop up have a Harley bung welded into the tank and get on of the screw in type chrome pop-ups that vent through the center instead of around the edge. Like this.

I know they aren't quite as cool but I would hate to see your beautiful paint job ruined by gas vapor. Thats my two cents.

Brandon, thanks a lot for the advice. I knew about the popup caps breathing issues with the paint. I was sure the pop-up caps have a Harley bung where I can plug any of their caps on it? Do you know by any chance how is the pop-up mechanism made? I was planning to get a Carlini pop-up paint saver:

Description: Pop-up paint saver, thread-in style paint saver, features spring loaded gas cap for clean fit. manufactured from high grade stainless steel.

The problem is that I really like that clean small cap look. Do you know if Carlini have problems with the gas venting? The reason why I want to do the small cap is because the deal I get on the customization price. Basically, I get to pay only $50 extra for the tank pop-up welding modification, pop-up cap, interior treatment and pressure seal. Is the the deal BMS gave me because of the previous struts issues I had. So that is an amazing offer, I save a lot.

If you would be me, what would you do? Let me know if I should still go for the cap mod and if the Carlini are good for the venting issue. I will check with BMS if the Carlini cap will fit on their mount. Thanks for posting details if you know it will fit.

Just find out if it vents around the outside or in the middle. If it has that paint saver around it you should be good. That is basically the same cap i gave you the link to just a little more of a dome design instead of flush. The cap in the tank that you posted earlier are the ones that are bad on paint. Alot of the weld in bungs are made for one particular pop up. Hence the bung and pop-up come together. As long as you use a harley bung and the pop up in the picture you provided I would think you will be ok.

Re: Stretched gas tank for Warrior?

Thanks Brandon. So basically, all I have to do is make sure that I get a Harley bung welded. After that, I can get a bunch of options for the paint savers. I never thought/knew there might be other types of pop-up caps, except the Harley ones. Thanks for opening my eyes. Guys, if you have more insight, please go ahead and post any extra tips you might have handy.

The way the cap pictured here works its you push down and turn the center, popping it up, then you screw the entire cap out just like a regular gas cap. It should use a Harley bung. If it is like all the others it will vent around the pop-up, not the paint.= GOOD

Here is an example of a bad pop-up

I see what you mean now, Brandon. For later reference, this is the pop-up cap you mentioned as being bad:

I wonder if the bong you posted has the same size as a Harley one. I believe the Carlini or any other similar paint saver will fit into the above bong and create a protective wraparound, so the paint is safe from the gas vent. I would like to make sure this is the case, if anyone knows. BTW, I think we have a great thread for people who want to follow the same road.

The bung pictured above is not a Harley bung. It is only for that particular pop up cap. The Harley bung looks like this

The vented one we need is on the right. They are usually sold in pairs like this. They are pretty cheap, $10-$12 or so. You can just chunk the non-vented one.

Here is a link to a place I found to buy them.

I also saw them in the Drag Specialties FATBOOK when I was at the Yamaha shop the other day. They are not in thier online catalog however
