    02/03 Transmission Recall

When I bought my warrior, I did not know to ask about this recall and the thief at the stealership did not give me any information on the bike except that some little grandmother only rode it to church every Sunday and never exceeded the speed limit.  Anyways, is there anyway to tell if this recall has been done?

    thanks in advance

Yes there is. You can have the dealer look up your vin number to see what recall work has been done. If you're tranny hasn'r been done you may be in luck. There are some performance mods that require splitting the cases. If your tranny hasn't been done you can simply buy the parts and there will be no labor charge to install them since the engine will be partially torn down to do the recall.

Hard to believe we hear of two without the tranny recall on the same day.

To give you an idea of what may have been done, check the VIN on the bike.  There should be a punch mark near the VIN if the recall was done.  I thought they put one on for each recall but I just checked mine and there is only one.  It was put on, above the 4th character of the VIN, when the tranny recall was done, I checked when I got it back after the work was done.  If you have the punch mark the recall should have already been done but have the dealer check your VIN to be sure.

Hahaha yah, i think i shocked the dealership when i called them and said that i needed the recall done.  I hope the techs remember how to do it!!!

I actually just got off the phone with them to get a status and the guy said it usually takes a week and a half to get the kit in.  Then i wanted to make sure that they would not charge me for labor for the HC pistons and he went on a spiel saying that it may be a half hour labor to ensure that they are the correct size.  I re-iterated the fact that they were the speedstar pistons MADE for the warrior, brand new in the package, and he still said it may be 20 mins labor...  Now, i was thinking of telling them when i go up there that if i'm charged for ANY labor for this, that i will go to another dealership.  What do you guys think?

    (sorry if i hijacked!)

Brian, did yours wind up needing the recall?

    Re: 02/03 Transmission Recall

I'd be having second thoughts about having them do the work. If the mechanic doesn't know enough about the motor to realize the HC pistons are a drop-in upgrade then I'd be looking for someone else to do the work. If he does know that and is simply trying to get a little extra $$$ out of you then I'd still be looking.
Bottom Line: I think you have two reasons to take it elsewhere.

Not exactly a drop-in procedure, rings need to be installed on new pistons, ring end gaps need to be checked and then install new pistons on rods. Not a big job but I would not argue over a half an hour. The 2 people I don't argue with: whoever is preparing my food and the guy that has my Warrior in pieces.

If the guy is any kind of mechanic at all, to him it's a "drop-in" procedure. I'd still find another dealer. Your mechanic scares the hell out of me.

    Well,

I do agree with you, but unfortunately, there are really only 2 dealer near my house and the other one is even worse!!!!

Correct me if i'm wrong, but wouldnt he have to do most of that regardless, even if i wasnt having him replace the pistons?

    Re: 02/03 Transmission Recall

Two things have changed versus before.  One thing, techs got special training back when the tranny recall was going on.  For example, the guy who did mine also headed-up the work for all the bikes in the Phoenix area.  They rented a warehouse space and set-up just for this work.  He flew to SoCal for training so he could manage the work, and that allowed the group to work very fast.  Second, these model year bikes now have many more miles on them today versus back then.

So maybe the tech realizes he won't be able to work as fast but the recall$ they get from Yami is fixed, and also maybe the tech feels he needs to (for example) hone the cylinder walls to protect the new rings, that's about fifteen minutes.  You might ask him if they will hone.  If not, maybe there's something else he needs to cover.  Like others, I don't see any extra steps needed, but if it were me I would want the cylinders honed based on mileage and age.

BTW I'd also think about new piston pins to connect the new HC pistons to the existing connecting rods, just in case.

    Re: 02/03 Transmission Recall

Hmmm that is something i will think about.   The bike only has 3200 miles on it, do you still think it could possibly need new pins?

On cars I'd always swap wrist pins when replacing pistons but 3,200 miles in all those years . . . holy cow.  Yep, they might be fine.
