    Flashing Low Fuel Light?

     Hello,

I own a 2003 road star warrior with 19000 miles on it. Couple weeks ago after I filled the tank and started ridding, I noticed that the LOW FUEL LIGHT IS FLASHNG ( it flashes eight times, stops, flashes eight times, stops- continously).

This must be some error code but noone knows how to find out what the problem is.

I took it to one mechanic, we took off the tank replugged all the connections, shook the tank in case there is some float inside stuck or something- nothing helped.

I took the bike to another mechanic, we disconnected the Power Commander and returned everything to factory settings but no help- the Power Commander is not the problem.

We checked the baterry- it is ok.

Also- my DIGITAL TIME AND TRIP COUNTER RESET ITSELF TO ZERO after leaving the bike in my garage over night.

I use the trip counter to know when to refuel as low fuel light is messed upso this reseting to zero is another anoying thing.

Can anybody provide any suggestions for this two issues; I will be thankfull.

    Re: Flashing Low Fuel Light?

are you REALLY sure the battery is OK?

    I mean REALLY sure?Big Smile

Have you tried disconnecting the battery for about 10 minutes... and then connecting back up again?

Well, mechanic checked the baterry this morning it read 13 volts; we turned on the bike to see if it is charging the batery and it was 14.1 volts which he said is fine.

I disconected battery for an hour; it did not help.

    Thank you for your input.

    from the manual...

"This model is also equipped with a self diagnosis device for the fuel level detection circuit. If the fuel level detection circuit is defective, the following cycle will be repeated until the malfunction is corrected: The fuel level warning light will flash eight times, the go off for 2.5 seconds. If this occurs, have a Yamaha dealer check the vehicle." Section 3-2

Just for the record: Disconnecting the battery for ten minutes or ten seconds or ten years.... will only reset the trip meters, the clock and the fuel light (if it's working at the time). Everything else in the ECU is non volatile.

    Frmo me previous post link:

UPDATE - Well, after pulling the fuel pump I rechecked the wiring diagram and traced the wires coming from the fuel level sensor. Black leads to ground and green leads to the tach (like everything else)by way of the headlight. Turns out that vibration took it's toll on the green wire inside the headlamp housing and shot the resistance to infinity, thereby producing the fuel level error.

Wrapped the wire and presto-chango! Error is gone & I'm baacckkk!!

    ALso from another post: http://rswarrior.com/forums/p/5440/70813.aspx#70813

Update: After checking wiring and dry breaks, isolated fault to fuel pump sending unit, resistance too high (almost open circuit). Sending unit only serviced by replacing fuel pump assembly ($500.00). Replaced fuel pump and it fixed the problem. Thanks to all for your help with this very unusual problem.

Sorry to be the bearer of potentially bad news: http://rswarrior.com/forums/t/5440.aspx and http://rswarrior.com/forums/t/21369.aspx (you should check it out first).

You could have two separate problems intermingled - your battery might be having problems under a full electrical load.

Thanks to everyone for offering opinions; I guess it is time for me to check diagrams and follow the wires.

Hopefully, the pump is not shot or something; hopefully it will be just some wire issue.

Thanks again and I will let you guys know when I fix the problem.

May I ask if you have a service manual, or if you know where to get a free e-copy that will help you learn how to on-board-test your sensors to save time?  If you need one, look in the Popular Mods topic under 'Manuals'.  Freebie.

Thanks, I own a service manual; I must admit I do not know where to start, hopefully  I will find the way to fix the issue.

    Re: Flashing Low Fuel Light?

I would start by checking your fuel pump sending unit for it resistance value.... Just to make sure we are not talking about replacing the fuel pump asembly first... if this checks out.. it's time to start tracing wires...
