240 swingarm... did it myself

Well, i decided to tackle the 240 swingarm modification myself, because i love the satisfaction of doing custom stuff myself, AND... i'm a cheap ass. [

]

I've got most of the material removal done, and i'm just waiting to get my wheel converted to an 18"x8.5" by Kosman Specialties and mount up a Metz 240 for final fitting. It only took me about 4 hours out in the garage to get it to this point (and half a quart of aluminum dust that i swept up off the floor afterwards [

] ), so i'm pretty pleased with it. I also cut off the belt guard tabs and smoothed those areas down. Here are a couple of pics of it so far (more in my gallery)...

CHUCK, IF YOU INSTALL H.I.D. LIGHTS YOU ARE GOING TO LOOSE HIGH LIGHTS. I JUST SWITCHED BACK TO SILVANIA SILVERSTAR IN ORDER TO HAVE BOTH LOW & HIGH LIGHTS. SAVE SOME MONEY MY FRIEND. SPORT BIKE WITH DUAL HEADLIGHTS HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH H.I.D.

I have no clue how _they_ do it, but i looked at a LOT of pics of those completed swingarms and decided that i could do it myself. All i've done so far is material removal with a die grinder and angle die grinder. A 250 or 280 swingarm is a different story (and way out of my skill level)!

Chuck, it's good to see a DIY'er, but a modified swing arm is serious stuff. I'm sure a moderator is going to chime in and mention the risks involved if not done by a site sponser and all, but I do know getting your swing arm to fit a 240 is not 'just' sanding down the stock swing arm. Before you put all back together, promise us you'll do a ton or research and get some facts on this mod.

My 240 arm is billet reinforced on the right side. This has nothing to do with Vendor Site Sponsership as Vector might want you to believe, but I have personally/physically seen a 240 arm that cracked on the right side after it was modified. The chrome started to peel away and under the chrome it was cracked.

These cracks are right along where the weld was ground down to smooth out. This is why they billet reinforce the right side arms for the 240.

Just make sure you know what you are doing. I would and have to recommend that you talk with folks who do this for a living.

And by no means am i promoting that this modification is an easy DIY for the average person. I just happen to feel comfortable going a little farther past the point that most people would not when it comes to mods and custom stuff.

Darkstar- I didn't get the feeling of "vendor site sponseship" when I read Vectors reply. I felt his reply was that of genuine concern for a fellow Warrior.
