    Single side swing arm

    Locked Reply Contact

So I am about 60% thru building a single side swing arm and am wondering if anyone has attempted this? I will be using an 18" wire spoke wheel and a 48 tooth sprotor with a 22 tooth front sprocket and 530 chain. I could stick with the belt but the cost of the break/pully combo was too much for me to bight off. The axel will be made from a Jeep Cherokee. The swing arm is stacked and welded 1.5" square tube. It looks like I should have a functional swing arm for about $1700. One heck of a lot of welding and grinding. I think one of the tricky parts is going to be incorporating my tight a** fender. I have been taking pictures and as it starts to come together a bit I will be posting some pictures but I really wanted to know if there is any of you with any experience with this. Also, do you have some suggestions on good places to get it chromed?

I have used chromemasters in Nashville TN. They do great work, but turn around can be slow in the winter due to their work load.

I would think that business has slowed enough now for a quick turn around.

You should also look into Cycle Image for Chrome.  They did an awesome job for me and they REALLY worked with me when it came to crunch time.

Hey Bull, That looks really great! Can't wait to see the finished product. I'm just wondering if the swingarm is thick enough to withstand the forces that try to bend it along the roll axis because yours is the thinnest single sided swingarm that I ever saw. Cycleimage as well as Walz for example use two thick pipes welded onto each other. Others use a massive block and cut the shape out of it. Just a thought...

Very Nice.  I love the wire wheels.

Next mod should be to do something with the seat.

How wide is your wheel and how wide of a tire are you planning on going?

Super trick. Hot rear wheel. I have a thought. While you are at this stage you could make a mount in front of the sprotor to moout your license tag. Plenty of room there. Just a thought, awesome job.

Did you slot the front section to allow for tightening the belt? Is it a one piece or two piece unit? Could you take some pics of the swingarm to frame mounting areas. Very cool to see you do it yourself.

Well, there is only one way to find out if it is strong enough, put my butt on it and ride it. I believe it is. It is two pieces of 1.5 square tube stacked and welded through both seams and a one piece bent piece of 1/4" plate welded along the upper joint and the lower joint. All weld areas have been ground to V s before welding for best penetration. It is solid welded in the front at the pivot tube. It adjusts at the back. The box looking piece in the previous picture is a slider that slides over the swing arm and the swing arm is slotted for the axle, probably the week link of the unit. it is extended 2.5 inches from stock. The axle is made from a jeep cherokee rear half axle. I am waiting for a 21 tooth front pulley from Eric to get it up and riding. Wish me luck.
