Damon:Been where? The Middle East? I did live there for a couple years (late 2003 - late 2005). I also speak Egyptian Arabic fluently and Classical Arabic semi-fluently. Does that count?
Ok you lived in the Middle East, I am proud of you. Where? You would not have made it more than a couple of hours in Fallujah, only because you are American, they do not care about how much you love them you are American and that is all that matters to them. Most of them hate Americans. The ones that dont love us and are glad we are there. I also speak Arabic semi-fluently so no it doesn't count for anything. What does count in my book is when you pick up a rifle and protect the man to your left and right and defend your country from another attack. I have heard all of your stories, I was here a week after they were attacked, and there when they were attacked but when it is directed towards you and your men it is a different story. So just being in the MIDDLE EAST doesn't mean squat to me. I hope that answers your question. If not let me try this NO, Damn I cant remember his name right now but he was an american that was fighting with them, against us he spoke Arabic too should that have made a difference? Again the answer is NO. What the hell was his name give me a minute and I will find it.
Don't get me wrong. I appreciate that, because of your combat experience, you have different perspectives and insights than those of us with none.
I'm not anti-military or anti-war. I don't think we should love our enemies, turn the other cheek, or otherwise become weak and passive. I do, however, think that we should hold ourselves to higher standards and treat our enemies with the honor and respect that all human beings deserve, even when they fail to reciprocate. We should stand as a pillar of human decency, rather than sink into the cesspool of hateful propaganda, bigotry, racism, and blind nationalism that our enemies inhabit. After all, if we become like them, then what right do we have to oppose them?
Call that stupid or naive or idealistic if you want, but I think Nietzsche put it best, and most simply:
"He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster."
That's pretty much all I'm trying to say. We've become the mirror image of the people we're fighting, which just makes both sides look bad.
Also, regarding your other post, the image with the cross and crescent is a metaphor - I'm sure you understand the concept, so I'm not sure why you made the silly rebuttal implying that the image was meant to be taken literally...
