That is terrible. Most Police Departments put officers on leave until after the investigation. If he shot an unarmed man he should not only be fired but jailed as well. With that said we do not have all the details.

It amazes me how so many of you are screaming for blood anytime a cop makes a mistake. This cop (who does a job most would refuse to do for very little pay) was chasing 4 burglary suspects when he ran across a man with a weapon of some type. A confrontation occurred verbal or other wise we do not know. Probably went something like Get on the ground and place your arms out to your sides. To which he got Fk no it isn't me.... Repeat get down/ put down the weapon..... another non compliance. man probably stepped toward the cop and 2 rounds center mass like he was trained. Yes he shot the wrong guy, but the teenage guy probably did not comply with the officers verbal commands. I hope they do a thorough investigation and if he did something illegal put him away, but if they find that he was doing his job and had reasonable fear of attack by this guy that he gets off and not thrown to the wolves. I am disgusted by the people who assume all cops should go directly to jail for any accident. Cops do a hard enough job and deserve respect. I screwed up a lot in my younger days and had cops draw on me. It is pretty easy to disarm the situation by complying to what they request. They put their guns away and I did not get shot.

Well said. It also amazes me that when a cop yells "Stop!!" and the suspect doesn't stop, you're not allowed to shoot him. I suppose if the guy was deaf it would be a different matter, but then why would he be running from the cop if he didn't know what was going on? Sad

I love how you play it all out. But I am calling bullshit.

When you click on the (first) article, look over to the right side where it says "slideshows" and  click on the deer pic. Absolutely breathtaking pics of one of my favorite parts of this beautiful country of ours.

Still not saying the officer did the right thing, but a guy that big could cause a lot of damage with a broomstick.

Plus if it is dark and you see a black or dark thing is a suspects hand and they do not comply... thats a shooting. Sorry. Your life rather than mine.

Not sure which of your 3 posts to reply to, but you would fit right into that police department just fine.

He has a point. It could have looked like a big gun in the dark!!! I don't blame the cop for shooting if that's what he thought it was and the guy he shot didn't comply with his commands to "drop the weapon" or whatever. I don't think the cops are there to sacrifice their lives for someone who would otherwise shoot them! You'd probably do the same thing in that situation, gowen. It's really hard to judge the guy when you haven't walked in his shoes. As one of the bloggers noted, that is a dangerous area with a lot of gangs and unless you have been there and worked as a cop there and actually witnessed the incident yourself, you have no room to judge.

I just feel that cops get a bad rap and deserve the benefit of the doubt. We were not there and did not have to make that decision. He has to live with it for the rest of his life. If he was criminally wrong fry him (oh wait he is in CA. jail for life). If not and it was an accident let him carry on and serve the community.

I'm just glad I live north of the border. Your love affair with fire arms is taking a huge toll. And no I'm not some tree hugging liberal. I grew up in the country and have fired off thousands of rounds and shot lots of furry creatures. We just don't run around killing each other wholesale.
