He was a beautiful dog, and I am trying not to get all red and puffy by crying at work. I don't know what I am going to do when I lose one of mine. That's the hardest part of owning a pet. They don't usually out-live us.

...not much I can say.  I sure wish there was something someone could do or say to help ease your pain Scott because you're obviously a very caring and kind person.  That just sucks and I'm so extremely sorry you're having to go through it.  As an animal lover myself though I have to commend you for doing the right thing and treating Coal so well and making those last days as comfortable as you could.  For all the good our pets do for us they deserve nothing less in my opinion and apparently yours.

Went through the same thing, cancer with my 9 year old boxer Gretchen.  Doc said she would live 3 or 4 more days or could perform surgery with no guarantees.  I brought her back home so that me and my family could say our goodbyes.  Sounds silly but we put a bandanna around her neck that I know made her feel special.  She lived another two weeks.  I knew it was time when she didn't enjoy the attention or care about the bandanna any more.  Good luck to you and Coal!!

I understand completely where you are.  I have a black lab myself Avery is 20 years old and for whatever reason still gets up every morning.  Just last week I took her in for her annual evaluation, and with the exception of a slight heart murmur the doc says there is nothing wrong with here.  She has no cataracts, and still has selective hearing.  He told me the argument for putting her down is the same as keeping her alive.  He said 'Let's see how far she takes us'.  I can't tell you how glad I was to hear that.  Because you guys have now made it impossible for me to see my screen, I can't begin to think how my heart is going to break when she has to go.  She has always been everything I wanted in a dog.  I count myself lucky to be graced with her life...Okay, I'm going now, I need a towel.

Thank you guys. You'll never know how much your words help. I can tell this is going to be one long term hurt.
