    doubledown:

My 12 yr old lab, Coal, went to the vet today with symptoms like arthritis. Turns out he has cancer. Options are to amputate the leg and do chemo or just give him pain meds and take him in when he's no longer comfortable. Doc said to amputate and do the chemo might buy one more year. I'm thinking, at his age, I'm just going to keep him comfortable and give him all the burgers and sleep on the bed he wants. He's a big, beautiful, black lab with all the qualities you could want in a person. Thank goodness he's a dog. Anyway, I really love him and this is some of the hardest news I've had in a long time. If I ever get a gallery I'll post a pic. There's a reason they are called "man's best friend". I'm sure going to miss mine...alot.

the same thing happened to me this weekend. took my 14 year old boxer to the vet this passed saturday cus she was walking strange and had problems laying down and getting up and also had some weird lumps on her side. the vet said it was cancer. well she is on pain meds now. let me tell you I haven't cried for her yet but I can promise you I will. she is a big part of the family! a really big part......   I will keep your friend in my prayers

Que mal me va.. pero que bien se pasa!!!

I'm sorry to hear that.  I cant even express what you will go through when that time comes, and I wont even talk about what I've experienced.  All I know is that I would not want to wish that feeling even on my worst enemy.  I know he's a happy dog with folks like you caring.

If its comfortable, its not custom.

Sorry to hear about your friend. If only they could live as long as we do. My first lab we had to put down at 8 years b/c of cancer, damn near broke my heart, so I can imagine what you are going thru. God Speed and take care.

Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

This may sound a little corny but this helped me before and after my rottie [ boomer]  passed away.  I hope this will help you also

Re: Just got some bad news (my dog)

I know what you are going through.  We lost a 6 year old Boxer last November to cancer.  Not easy to do.

    This helped too.

     Why did God make dogs?

I don't think it was accidental, so why do you
     suppose "hounds" are around?

Recently, I watched an elderly woman trying to
recover from a stroke. Her brain was damaged, and
her arm was weak, so her therapist brought, of all
things, a dog to help out. Instead of completing
monotonous drills, the elderly patient threw a
bright red Frisbee across the room, and the dog
bounced over, picked it up, and brought it back, his
eyes begging, "Throw it again, please!"  And she
did, over and over and over, forgetting that she was
actually working  quite hard.  What possessed God to
     make dogs anyway?

Certainly there are exceptions, and certainly people
can breed dogs to bring out the worst in them, but
in general, there is nothing more  selfless, loving
or patient than a dog.  Mistreat it and it comes
back to you anyway. Ignore it and it never gives up
hope that you  will be its friend again. Make it
wait days to go play, and it will still be ready.
It offers you friendship and companionship and in
return asks only  for food, water and an occasional scratch
     behind the ears.

Why would God bother to make such a creature?  I
suppose that if dogs were like people they would
eventually give up on us.  But they never  do.  A
dog's love is almost impossible to destroy, because
it's not a  love you earn; it's simply a love you
     are given.

In other words, dogs LOVE unconditionally.
     Unconditional love; unending patience;  faithfulness
     to the very end.

Do you suppose, just perhaps, that God  made dogs
to show us a little something about Himself?  Do you
think  maybe "man's best friend" is really pointing
us to the one who is  truly our very best friend?
You could learn a lot from a dog. Dog  spelled
     backward is ___________???? (GOD)

Guys, all I can say is thank you. Your words, payers, and thoughts mean more than you will ever know. Your stories have brought out my...er.. allergies as well. I will honor all of your kind words as I will enjoy every last minute with Coal. Our walks will last a little longer. The scraps will be more plentiful. Although he has registered papers and has a hunting family line, he is just a family dog and has always been treated as a best friend. I'll make sure that however long he has, it is quality time. And when the time comes....I'll probably need to call on all of your kind words again. It's always hard to lose cherished family member, even if it is just for a little while.

Sorry to hear about your dog.  I had to put our 14 year old Min-Pin to sleep about a month ago when she had her last major stroke.  Enjoy the time with him and don't be afraid to share the table scraps he shouldn't be eating with him.  Dogs have a very high pain tolerance, so if he looks like he is in pain, he's hurting a lot.  I do foresee a lot of hot dogs with pills in them for him in the future.

I know the voices aren't real, but they do have some good ideas.

I want to die while asleep like my grandfather, not screaming in terror like the passengers in his car.

That's horrible news, I'm so sorry.  I hope the remaining time he has left is longer then expected and as enjoyable as absolutely possible.  Prayers, wishes, and all the best to you, Coal, and your family.

Re: Just got some bad news (my dog)

Just wanted to post an update. We're going to the surgical referral center today to hear out our options for treatment. He is the same sweet dog who is beside me everywhere I go but his limping is becoming more constant. We have him on pain killers and anti inflammatory meds but ever since the docs xrayed him the other day he seems to have declined faster than I would have thought. The doc said he may feel better in a day or two after the soreness of the exam goes away. It is hard to see your best friend uncomfortable, especially when he is constantly with you. We've been reading stories at the dog bone cancer website of several dogs who have had amputations of the leg and are doing great, but there are more who are not. These are hard decisions to make. He lives in the house with us and we have no other children. We know and love his every sound he makes in our home and it wouldn't be the same without it. Some may say, "it's just a dog", but there are others of us who know better. Please keep us in your thoughts as we make these hard decisions. Thanks.
