    Service program through dealer

I'm picking up a "new" 2006 Warrior on Saturday and just got back from the dealer to get the process started.  I was offered 2 programs... the extended warranty through Yamaha, for 4 years with no service co-pay, and a service program.  The service program covers all regular service as outlined in the owner's manual.  That service program is ~950 for 3 years for the Warrior.  I've always done oil changes on my last bike and usually do them on my cars, but they were making it sound like a science project since the Warrior has a dry sump system.  Paraphrased, what they said... if you don't have the right cc's of oil you'll have smoking and the motor not running right.  Is the oil change for these bikes that crazy?  Does the service program seem worth it?  Is the recommended maintence that involved that would warrant the program.  I'm planning on going with the additional warranty just b/c you never know what will happen and I plan on having this for a while.

Thanks in adavnce for whatever y'all have got to say.

I have yet to change my oil in my bike, I only have about 3700 miles on it but everyone on here says that if you follow the service manual it is pretty straight forward.  I think everyone just empties it then adds about 3 quarts the starts it for a min or 2 then adds the other 2 quarts.  Check out this link I think it will answer your issues and concerns.

950 for three years is a good price (IF you would have taken the bike tot he dealer for maintenance anyway). For example, I was quoted $210 for the first 600 mile service and $125 for an oil change using synthetic oil after that. So in three years you would eat that 950 up quick.

Oil changes are no big deal. remove 2 bolts and filter. Replace bolts and new filter, fIll half way, run, continue filling, go for a ride, check levels.

yeah but with plugs and filter plus the oil your looking at around 40-45 bucks every 4k I know that I dont trust the f'n dealers anymore after the new tire incident a few months ago.

Put on a VBAK and solve your air filter and plug changing problems.  Get a jack stand of some type (you'll need it for mods anywhay) and a good set of metric sockets/wrenches.  Changing the oil is no big deal, but it does take a couple of extra sets.  The beast does really hold 5 qts and it will all come out.  More people have had issues with dealers doing something wrong than working on these bikes themselves.   Also, keep in mind that the dealer is going to be putting Yamalube back in and will charge you extra for syn oil.  Your call, but $950 will buy a lot of mods and a world of good advise on how to repair things.  I would suggest that you get a shop manual tossed into the deal for free if it is not too late.

Dry sump system??? Go kick that guy in the nutz.  And I doubt the service program covers synthetic oil, if they say it does then make sure it is in writing.  Because I seriously doubt it.  If you change the oil and are capable of doing your own maintenance then decline it and save the $$.  Who actually thinks that you need to change plugs every 4k miles???  Not needed and if you want to plugs are only like $1.25 each.

Simple answer is...if you have money and feel like you are safer having some stranger wrench on your bike then go ahead.  But really come on, the bike is as simple as it gets, common brains and a manual will allow you to do it yourself and chances are it will be done better than the dealership with less hassle.

Thanks everybody, these are the kinds of responses I was hoping to get.  I did most of the work on my Kawasaki so I'm not that mechanically blind.  I didn't have to officially decide on the program until Saturday when I take delivery of the bike, but I'm now definitely not getting the service program.
