Engine dies while on the freeway!

I've experienced this on three occasions now, so something is not right.

When cruising down the freeway at around 3K RPM for about 1o minutes the engine sometimes just dies,

It appears to be not getting any fuel. I then slow down and after about 10-15 seconds the engine comes back to life.

I was wondering if anyone has heard of this before. I was thinking maybe the fuel pump is going out and can not keep up with the demand, but this does not happen all the time????

Could it possibly be your gas tank vent lines.Just guessing.

I read a post previously with this exact thing happening at around 3K to 3200 and another person replied saying it happened to them at 2500 if they stayed there too long.  I don't recall what the reason was or the solution but I do believe someone had the answers for them so I'd suggest doing a search and find that particular post.

I tried to find that post I was talking about and couldn't but I did find similar ones.  In almost all of them the suggestions were to check the battery connections, kill switch, and kickstand kill switch connections.  There were some that had similar symptoms when their CPS failed also and at least one person had this type of thing and it was cured after changing their battery so maybe it's possible it's electrical?  The vent hose idea sounds very plausible to me also but I'm definitely not qualified to say.  All things you could check though at least.

Check your mods, and be sure your coil wires haven't come loose from pesky hot-rod vibration.  Check your error codes.  I think you already did your recalls right?  I'd bet its something simple like a loose woman - er - uh - wire.

Well I checked the battery voltage and it is 12.87v. While I was in there checked the connections. I have done all the recalls to date.

Went through the diagnostics and it shows 3 errors.

    15- TPS

    22- Air Intake Temp Sensor

    23- Atmospheric Pressure Sensor

I have noticed that this tends to happen when the outside temp is around 100 deg.

Looks like I'll be checking these out tomorrow.

Have you had the Throttle Position Sensor & Crank Position Sensor  recalls done?  An intermittant short/open in either will kill the engine.

it is unusual to have three codes at once unless you have a loose ground wire somewhere. that will mess with the ecu and can throw all kinds of codes.

i would check all your groundwires and make sure they are tight and clean.

also load check the battery , if you have a weak one it will still show good voltage but can cause all kinds of trouble.

After having it stall out a few times, it would seem that the fuel flow was getting shut off. It would happen when the temps get around 90 or more and when I'm cruising down the freeway at 3K RPM.

It would not show any error codes in the diagnostics.

Thinking it was in the fuel delivery system, I have removed the PCIII and have not had anymore stalling.

Has anyone ever have a problem with their PCIII?

Still need to ride it for little while longer just to make sure.

My first check would be CPS... even if you have changed it in the past...

By the way how long ago did you do your CPS recall?

I did mine twice! The first time was just before they did the recall and the second was with the new part when it became available for the recall.

Re: Engine dies while on the freeway!

Well apparently removing the PCIII did not solve my problem it still happens to die while cruising down the freeway, it just does not happen quite a frequently.

It seems to happen when the engine  is running around 2.7-3K rpms. The fuel was being shut off and would resume after about 4 seconds.

I did remember that someone mentioned they had the similar problem and replaced their Lean Angle Cutoff Switch. So with that in mind I located mine and removed it, opened it up and discovered the a little ferite weight that swings back and forth over an IC sensor chip. I began to think that the engine must be vibrating at a certain frequency when running at around 3k rpms that it interacts with the weight and would make the IC chip think the bike exceeded the lean angle and then cutoff the fuel to the TBs.

So I taped the little weight down so it would not swing and I have not experienced the shutdown now for over a week. I do realize this is a safety device and is there for a reason, but having the engine shutdown while in heavy freeway traffic was bigger issue at the moment.

I'm not sure if I should replace the sensor, since there appeared to be nothing wrong with mine. It would have been nice if the weight were suspened in a heavy viscous fliud to absorb some of the vibrations.

I'm throwing this out there for some suggestions?

Re: Engine dies while on the freeway!

Its amazing what info is on this site, but even so, good work on your part.

Q: you have a PC3 did you do perfect install?  Also, either way, do you still have that scotch-lock wire connector installed that connects the gray wire to the yellow wire at the TPS?  When that connector is installed and vibrates awhile, I suspect the yellow wire is degrading in some cases.  Its hard to remove the scotch-lock once installed and there's a risk of breaking the yellow TPS wire and there's not enough yellow wire left to repair the broken wire if that happens.  I can't help but think this has something to do with your problem.  But I can't see how since you've solved it.  Its one of those nagging feelings.

On this lean angle sensor business, did you call Yami/Star to politely express your innermost feelings Storm  Indifferent  Super Angry

I'd replace it if the problem is solved long-term and Yami might even step up who knows.

These are the only topics from Popular Mods and I don't notice anything new-to-you since you've solved it already.
