WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF THIS HAPPENING????

I noticed yesterday a noise like a scraping sound  and upon further insp. found a small prea sized rock embedded in my belt . poked out the rock and now I see a bulge in my belt right in the center of the belt. I think the rock was partially protruted through. it was in between the cogs of the belt. My  bike has 1000 miles on it ,still under warranty,I am going to Americade in a few weeks 5 hr ride ,is this belt ok or should I ditch it. just my luck. Does this hurt the sprocket??

    thanks for any info

I would not take any chances with that belt and change it. As far as the sprocket goes i guess i'd use it as long as it checks out ok.

Course this is not a warranty item just bad luck. Super Angry

Same thing happened to me last summer, I was five hundred miles from the house. She got me home just fine, in fact I rode it around for a few thousand miles like that. I won't hurt the pulley any more once you get the stone out. You could prolly ride it indefinitely, but you may want to avoid wheelies.

I had a spot like that on my belt too, a couple hundred miles after I noticed it I snapped the belt. I'd get a new belt before going on a 500 mile trip, sitting on the side of the road waiting for a tow is not fun, nevermind doing it a few hundred miles from home.

order a new gates poly chain belt from phats.  In the mean time, don't do any hard shifts and aggressive riding, and you should be ok.

Well not warranty .....if they can prove it was a rock.  I would mark the spot and tell them you noticed a place where your belt is coming apart while cleaning the wheel. Couldn't hurt.....admit nothing!

XHARLEYRDR road with a hole in his belt from a rock for several weeks with no problems. He is not a gentle rider.

had that happen to mine but put a hole in the belt in the center. Rode to Sturgis and back on it and then the following year, rode to Sturgis and back two up with more stuff strapped to a bike than makes any sense. Dropped off my future wife at her house, drove 40 miles and got stuck in the wrong lane of traffic and came to a stop while the lane next to me was doing 50. I got after it and snapped the belt, 20 miles from home. I snapped a new belt two up basically doing the same thing so, I can't say for sure with all that extra weight it was the belts fault. Do what makes you feel good. If it was me, I'd probably take my trip with a belt in a bag with me. Yeah, it's not real simple to change a belt without a jack but it can be done (if your'e not prone to hernias).  I'm on my fourth belt now.

I'd probably put a new belt in a bag, too.  Worst case scenario you have to wait for a tow to a shop that has the tools to change it out, but you won't have to wait for the part.

    +1.

A web search will turn of several vendors for belts.  Its worth shopping - especially if you have a hole.
