Dont know about straight 80w. I used Mobil1 Syn 75w90 from a local auto parts store.

Just curious, is that what everyone else is using too? How about a petroleum based product? Any suggestions?

    Dave

75w-90 is a proper lube for this application. The important number is the Kinematic Viscosity Number. I can't explain it nearly as well as the link below.

For all you ever wanted to know about gear oil, check this link:

PM me with any questions, always glad to try to help.

Dang Ashton......It only took a year to get an answer to my question....LOL!! I have used the Yamaha recommended 80W90 transfer case oil (like I have pictured above) and have made out just fine.

I'm sure the Amsoil works fine as well. Its a moot point anyway since I no longer own the bike.

Re: HOW TO: Transfer Case Oil Change

Can anyone post the pictures of the level check and drain holes again?  The original ones don't seem to be working.

    Thanks! Big Smile

Could some please post pictures of the drain hole and fill hole again. The ones CarKnee posted did not make it across when the site was upgraded.

     thanks.

I just changed the oil, but I am already over 1/2 quart and it is not at the fill check hole.  Does anyone know if the '07 might take more oil.  I am going to run it about a mile and re-check.  It is not that far from the fill hole, so I am pretty sure that it will be alright.

I just filled mine until it spilled out, then waited for it to stop.  Make sure you have your bike upright when you check the level.  That is actually as per the tech manual page 3-33, how to check the level.

It's a raised bolt on the same side as the transfer case. Here is a pic (#2 bolt)

Make sure you have the proper tool to open the fill port!!!  I didn't and really messed up the plug.  Lukily I have a pressureized pump and filled it through the drain hole.  Still, I have to now buy a new plug AND the tool because mine is now all marred up.

Saw a suggestion on here to use a 50-cent piece.  That worked well.
