I was out for my typical 6am Sat morning ride on my Trek road bicycle. I have a bright red shirt on and a flashing red light on my bike....it's still kinda dark out but there are even streetlights on this section of road. I'm riding along about 18-20mph on a very short section of the route I always ride that doesn't have a bike lane or shoulder. It's only about a tenth of a mile and the speed limit is 35mph but I'm always uncomfortable until I get through it.

I hear a car coming up behind me but there is no cars coming towards me so he has plenty of room to get over. The next thing I knew, I was sliding down the road on my head and shoulder for about 20 feet. Then I went off into the dirt like a rag doll. I look over to see the white car keep going. His mirror is laying next to me (my body tore it off). I rolled around for a couple of minutes to calm down and figure out how bad I was hurt. Then I see the guy pull up on the other side of the road. He says "what happened?" I say "You took me out, that's what happened" He says "It wasn't me" Then he grabbed his mirror and started heading for his car. I jumped up (pain and all) and said I'm getting your plate number.....He said "no your not" and then he bent his plate up fromn the bottom so it couldn't be read.....TOO LATE, I got it. I called the cops, Alabama tag # came back to a 97 ford taurus....yep, thats it.....they are still looking for him, said it's felony hit and run with injuries.

I took myself to the hospital, I didn't want the wife and kids to have to wait in the ER. I have major road rash on my shoulder and both legs and my left arm has a fracture at the elbow that will require surgery to repair. I have to see an orthopedic surgeon on Tuesday. They suspect I have torn the ligaments in my wrist. I took 2 nurses, one to hold me and one to turn my forearm, just to splint my arm...... luckily they gave me a lot of morphine, but that meant Laura had to come and get me to go home.

I won't be riding anything for a long time.

Guess I'm stuck with the doc bills too, unless they find the guy....even then, he prob has no ins.

be safe out there....It could have been a lot worse, my helmet is cracked in 4 places and has a flat spot from sliding.

Dang Ken , glad your ok , that guy was pretty brave to come back just to get his mirror.Heal up quick bro.

Jesus!!! I'll be the first to admit that I don't ride my mountain bike with a helmet. I swear I will now. Only takes 1 time. Glad to know you you the a$$hole plate number, and you're ok.

Man you are so lucky you had on a helmet. That S.O.B. should be locked up under the jail. I hope they find that creep in the worst way. Take care bro and keep your chin up. It could have been a lot worst.

Took a lot to do what you did ... can't believe he came back ... did he seem drunk ???? They will find him, I hope you left some DNA or fibers on his car and the bastard does not get a chance to wash it.

beat the crap out of that guy and wouldn't stop even if he
wasn't moving anymore. Anyway, glad your still with us to tell the
story and at least your Warrior is still ok on the brighter side?

Get well soon man. I hope the guy does jail time. I'd suggest you get a good lawyer. If he doesn't have insurance, clean him out.

I hope you get healed up man. Hit and run, what a douche bag. Hope they find that prick.

On a side note though and just my opinion, I dont think pedal biker should be allowed to ride on the street. Its dangerous. Not just for the pedal biker, but for the cars that have to move over into oncoming lanes to avoid a bike traveling 15 mph in a 40mph zone. I have seen some bad car accidents caused by pedal bikes riding on the road. Pedal bikes should be on the side walk or off road trails. Streets are made for motorized vehicles, plain and simple. end rant, sorry.

I got friends in Law enforcement if you want me to get his address!![}][}] Then you could go get him! In the mean time enjoy the drugs and heal quick!

Sorry to hear you got taken out. Glad your injuries weren't worse. Hope they find the guy that did this. Keep us posted on it.

Wow. I#%92m glad you are ok. Don#%92t worry; the Police will catch that idiot. I got rear-ended AND sideswiped in Manhattan last year. Some cell phone distracted knucklehead in a Jag rear-ended me. I got out of my car and approached his, demanding to see his license & insurance; he peeled out and struck me with his car. That fool is still in jail.

I am hoping for a few things here. They find the guy, he has insurance, you heal completly. He gets busted for all his TLC. I can't understand how cold hearted some people can be.

That is absolutely terrible. You would think that a person on a bike (with a flashing light even) would be safe.. The fact that this A**Hole hit you then came back for his mirror and didnot help you is even worse. Hope he gets caught quickly and you heal well. Good Luck
