    Corbin seats

Let me first say that I did a search and did not find what I was looking for, so with that said........... I am interested in ordering a Corbin Hollywood and pillion but I can't decide what colors/materials to go with. I like the look of the baby alligator but I have heard people saying that they wear out faster.[:(] Is this true? I also like the ostrich but I was wondering what combinations of patterns and side panels you have used, and what holds up the best? Also, is there anyway or any site that can show me what my selections will look like together? I am thinking maybe black ostrich or baby alligator with dark gray side panels. What do you guys think?
    Thanks for any input.....[:D]

According to the Corbin rep that helped me pick out my seat, you can use anything for the side panels because of how thin that area is. You can't beat Corbins customer service, I stayed on the phone 45 minutes to an hour trying to decide what patterns and materials to go with.Give them a call on thier 1-800 # , they will be more than glad to help [:D]

    Re: Corbin seats

Any textured leather will smooth out over time if you sit on it. I would suggest that the side panels is where you put your textured leather, and not the seating surface. The first solo I had on my bike had the faux-ostrich and they flattened out in less than 3 months to a fraction of their original texture. For the seating surface, just choose a natural leather texture (as it's natural, the texture will stay damn near forever) and accent the sides with alligator if you like as I did on this seat:

Also, If you order plain black leather for the side panels Corbin WILL PUT VINYL!!! They say its because vinyl wears better in a compression area. That may be true, but was the only gripe I had about my seat. In hind sight I should have picked a textured or colored leather for the side panel if I wanted leather there. Make sure to order black (or mathcing color thread) for the "Corbin" logo or you will get neon-white. I ordered it with black. Here is the picture with vinyl on the sides and Bomber Jacket leather on the top:

NOTE: They dont offer Bomber Jacket brown on their web site, but ask and they can do it. Be aware that an oiled leather finish like this, while soft and supple, tends to absorb anything you spill on it and will take on a worn, lived-in look just like a jacket would. I wanted this, but its NOT as durable as a top grain hide would be.

The color swatches that Corbin has on their web site are VERY inaccurate. There are too many variables like graphics cards, monitors, color settings in the OS, etc to get a true color of any kind. Your best bet is to look at pictures or real bikes (like do a gallery search for "Corbin" on this site) because if a picture is in the sun, shade, has a tint, etc, you will be able to tell by looking at it before choosign your color.

Remember that Corbin will do stitching (like the flames on my seats) for free, as well as give you siping (or whatever you call the stuff at the seams) although be aware that those can come out over time. I Strongly recommend ordering stitching becasue they put a thin layer of soft foam on the back of the leather when they do the stitching. This does two things: one, it gives the top of the seat a slightly plusher feel, and two, it allows micro-movenet between the leather layer and the main foam block, increasing the life of both the cover and the seat itself. If you are anywhere near their factories, you can ride your bike in and they will custom shave a seat for you. This is what I did with my two-tone seat, and it is WONDERFUL!

One thing to consider when looking at their solo seats, the Hollywood solo is very low in back and your butt will tend to slide off it under high acceleration as compared to the Solo seat. If you want a butt-ledge to brace yourself against but dont want to go to to the Stinger style, I suggest asking for a dished out Solo *with NO back rest bar* -- They come stock with a backrest bar that will rack your tail-bone through the foam if you have them dish it out. They will make a pan for you (at no extra charge) without that backrest mount in it, giving you more foam and allowing them to disk out the butt part more (which is how my two tone is made). Also, if you are short, make sure you tell them to shave down the sides near the front so that its not quite as wide and you can reach the ground easier.

All of these things you can ask for by phone. I have bought 4 seats from Corbin so far, and I have been happy with every one.

    Hope this helps!

    JT

    Re: Corbin seats

When i dealt with Corbin back in '05' they offered to send out swatches. The individual i spoke to was well informed regarding mixing & matching and helped me come up with the proper specs so that i could end up buying the seat from our site sponsor at a significant discount [;)]
Here were the specs for my '04':
    Stinger Seat # Y-W-4-STNG
    1. Smooth Black Leather Seating with “Wildfire” stitching in the seating panel or equivalent.
    2. Black Faux-Baby ‘gator Leather Side Panel only.
    3. #79 Yamaha Charcoal Tail Flames if possible and practical?
    4. Standard Black Vinyl on Tail section.

Yes, Corbin are happy to send out swatches. I wonder about their customer service. My seat was built incorrectly because the guy 'input the wrong thing'. No apology or anything. The Young Guns will get to them on Friday. One person says there is no priority treatment for its rebuild, another said of course it's priority. I will be calling them to make sure they have the correct information and then once or twice a week thereafter. The first Young Guns was so soft I could squeeze the foam about .75 inch. You could feel the metal bracket easily through the rear section. Then he gave me Ostrich behind Shark. Yuk!! Our site sponsor and Ike in particular have been excellent (as always) since I bought it through them. None of the problem was their fault--all Corbin. They have said that out of the last 10 Corbin seats they ordered, they have had some sort of trouble with every single one. 0 for 10--not the best record I would say. They are considering dropping Corbin. I wish Mike Corbin knew what was going on. I'm sure he'd change company policy.

    Re: Corbin seats

FYI the service rep pretty much tried to talk me out of my color, well not really talk me out of it but he did ask me several times if it really was what I wanted [:D]

They will work with you for sure, great customer service imo.

I went with the Tan Faux Ostrich everywhere and I absoultely love it, it's exactly what I was looking for.

    Re: Corbin seats

While there are one or two consistent voices on this forum that suggest Corbin's customer service is problematic, I would note that in most cases they have ordered theirseat through a dealer and not from Corbin directly. Also, while Corbin's in-house service is a true custom seat manufacturer, their mail/internet order is a production house.

They are dealing with a complicated product (in terms of the thousands of seat posibilites) and are attempting to stay competitive in price even given these thousands of seat combinations. Given their place in the market I believe they put out a great product for a fair (not cheap) price for an impressive array of applications with good to excellent customer service. Do not expect total hand-holding, and if you deal through a third party in order to get a price break, expect the possibility of issues that the added complexity to the transaction creates.

Again, I have ordered four seats for three different bikes and felt it was a great value and a great experience every time. Annecdotal, perhaps, but all I can do is relate my personal expereince.

Thanks for the input guys! I think I may go with the alligator side panels to accent the seat and maybe the flame stitching on the seating surface. Thanks again....

    Re: Corbin seats

Whilst I bought my seat through our sponsor, I ordered the actual leather styles/ colors through a Corbin guy. He just 'happened to hit the wrong button'. I can't believe the foam is correct since it's so soft. The seat arrived at Corbin today according to Fed-Ex for its rebuild. We shall see what happens.
