Near perfect match for stock black paint

I wanted to share that in my effort to get my Warrior back to like new condition, I had to play with several different paints and methods to match the stock flat black paint that is on the frame and many other parts.

I found that through a 4 step process, I was able to achieve a near perfect match.

Here is a picture of the stock clutch cover I removed, the right side is stock, and the left side I painted.

To acheive the flat look with a slight metallic accent, I used 2 Rust-Oleum products, Professional High Performance Enamel in flat black, and metallic black.

After the surface is cleaned and prepped:

    1. Apply a coat of flat black
    2. With the flat black still tacky (not wet), apply a coat of metallic
    3. While the metallic is still wet, fog a light coat of the flat over the top (make sure the metallic slightly shows through)
    4. After the paint is fully cured, I wiped them down with mineral spirits to help obtain a more consistant sheen.

On some parts that are larger, I applied a final coat of clear lacuer in a satin finish, this helps with the fact that the metallic is gloss, and so the sheen might look spotty on larger pieces.

While this is stil not identical to the stock finish, it is very close, and no one would ever know the difference.

Nice! How many trials did it take to figure that out? I am guessing that you have some experiance with paint, or at least with making the best out of limited resources. I'm gonna have to try this on a few parts that have been dinged up.

I used the same metallic finish and was thinking about using a similar process but I just left the metallic, close enough for the girls I date LOL!!!

Just for your info I used the Stovebright paint to paint anything on the frame it really matches well when it dries. It is a metalic black looks shinny when you first apply but when it dries it matches very well. I used it to repaint after I dumped my bike and was pleased with the results.

I actually will go with a brushed clutch cover, but this was the best stock part to use to test my paint matching skills.

jhnfitz- where did you buy the Stove Bright, that would be so much easier than my method.

Hey GolfHawk.....Where did you buy that paint? I've checked Walmart and Advance Auto so far, they don't have the types you've listed.

I was able to find both colors at Home Depot and Lowes, that is where you should have started [;)]
