rear brake res relocate, req on 280, Pics, cheap

I found the need to relocate the rear brake resevoir from the stock location after the install of the 280 kit, this was not an issue with the 240. I have also found the need to modify the stock fender to 13 inches wide to fit over the tire. The pics show the fender stays spaced out 5/8ths of an inch on both sides allowing room for the wider fender. The sleeves also got removed from the stays to get this all together. I also had to move my exhaust hanger to the outside of the mount for swingarm clearance. If you are running short pipes you have probably scrapped the hanger anyway. Anyway the stock brake resevoir can be moved 3 inches forward for basically less than a dollar. Check out the pics. It is now out of harms way. Why pay Barons to relocate it, I cancelled my order. The wider fender is in the works, cut weld grind etc... I managed to reshape the stock fender to over 13 inches wide before it started to distort. I pushed it back to 13 inches. This alows me to still run the stock(UFO) tailight. I have the reshaped stocker mounted on the stays the way I have them set using some 40mm long adonized bolts. I made a sandwich of washers (1 aluminum between two neoprene rubber) to go between the stays and the fender to take up the extra space and protect the paint. The stays are space out from the frame using 1 5/8 inch spacer between the stay and the frame. The spacers are actually stainless collar ties from the parts bin at the local hardware store. The bolts I used are 10mm Adonized like on the stays about 25mm longer than the stock stuff. The nuts and washers are all stainless.

    Image Insert:

This shows the res moved forward using the front hole for the rear bolt and the small L bracket I made mounted on a bolt the is mounted from the inside of the battery box under the seat. Yes I know the nut is not on yet... This fits under the fender lip, I measured first and drilled only 1 hole. Fitting the bolt from the inside is a bitch, there is a ton of stuff inside that box.

    Image Insert:

This is from the top showing the newly gained clearance. It would have been creamed by the tire in the stock location.

    Image Insert:

Just a different angle, shows the reworked exhaust bracket also.

    Image Insert:

From the side much less noticeable than stock.

    Image Insert:

A good shot of the newly gained clearance.

    Image Insert:

A good shot of the fender stays in there new location, lots of space gained here.

    Image Insert:

The finished look. The bike is still on the lift. I will start to lower it on Sunday in small increments and see where all the fiddling has gotten me as far as ride height. Currently she sits 2 inches higher than stock because the brake resevoir was in the way. Not anymore...

    Image Insert:

From the rear before the fender went back on. Look at that bad boy, a little under 12 inches wide.

I found the fender easy to work with up to 13 inches. After that it starts to crease where the front weld is on the mounting bracket for the taillight. I started with the eBay fender I bought before messing with the painted stuff. I don't want to repaint it. $160 for eBay $500 for the the painter if I cracked the clearcoat or paint. No contest in my book. The stock paint took all of my abuse without distorting. I may not cut and weld a new one if this all pulls together, I'll post after its lowered.

Yes the fender has to be removed to relocate the resevoir for any of you stockers lookind to do this.

Looking good grumpy. So what your saying is that you are grabbing the fender and pulling it apart?

Pretty much. I made jig sort of out of some 2x4 and a vice to spread out the force being applied. I tried not to cause any sharp angles in the steel.

LEts see some pics with the stock fender. I wanna do the 280, but didn't want to get rid of my painted fender. I have a tricky air, does it look like it will be cleared all the way down on the sides?

You can just use the hose by itself as the reservoir. Just cut the hose off and put a bolt in the end of the hose. it works, trust me. simplicity as its best.

Using the hose by itself may work but will allow h2o to get in more easily. Unless you swap out brake fluids weekly this is not a good idea. Brake fluid is hygroscopic and will attract h2o. Rendering poorer brake performance and eventual corrosion to your calipers bores and the cups. Just an FYI. Nice job Dave, BTW. Very simple and cheap.
