    Brake job front and rear?

So, figured I would be proactive and swap out the brake pads front and rear.

    Need some tips.

? do I need to mess with the rotors? other than micing them for thickness?

? just pop out the old pads and pop in the new ones?

? will I have to bleed off some brake fluid to make room for the new thicker pads just to get them on?

    thanks

    For my 2 cents...
Don't do both axles at the same time. That way you still got stop... even if you f**k up.
Do the fronts one side at a time.
Clean caliper pistons before pushing them back, and make sure they go back straight.
You shouldn't have too much fluid unless you topped off since the last lining change.
Some will tell you to "Scuff or Roughen" the rotors, but I never do. Some of the new high performance pads have a "bedding compound" on the surface of the lining to help with break-in.

I've got >32,000 miles on my '04' and the pads have plenty of friction mat'l.

The shop manual is very specific on minimum thickness and the wear indicator. I suggest you check these specs before wasting your money [^] ... no machining rotors, so stay away from MIDAS [:D]

More importantly, you should be changing your brake fluid yearly (DOT 4 or 5.1) and also the swollen rubber brake hoses to SS brake lines on your '02' [:0] then you'll see a drastic difference in brake performance. Just my .02

Good input guys. I thought while I had the rear tire off and being an 02, it would just make sense to swap the rears out...but I will go back and double check for wear before moving forward.

and I think I will leave the brake fluid change and brake line swap up to the professionals. thanks for the advice guys!

No, i prefer the 3-pc Galfer [;)] and i recall ArizonaWarrior having a source for <$100.00 which is a much better price than i paid last year [:0]http://www.rswarrior.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=61599

If you don't need frt & rear pads then you're trading $'s and improving the braking performance. Phats sells the stock length Russell 3-pc line same as the Yamaha accessory at a great price and it's a direct bolt on. My Galfer custom mounts differently:http://flickr.com/photos/15071518@N07/sets/72157603774971903/

If you are replacing all your brake pads, I'd reccomend changing out your brake fluid, while you are at it. Going to have to bleed the lines any ways. Might as well have new fluids too.

Re: Brake job front and rear?

This whole brake thing turns into a "whole brake thing" you know? However, its worth every penny at 125mph when the bike is a few years old. The braided stainless is a very very very worthwhile investment upgrade. Do the pads at the same time, I use OEM pads for various reasons. Here's the thing, you can have brakes that last 50,000 miles or you can wear the pads out braking hard in the twisties and powering out of the curve with a grin ear to ear. Its like the man said, you can live safe, or you can slide into heaven's gates with a smile screaming 'what a ride' and this machine will do that for you no problem. All you need is steady firm dependable brakes. Preferably with chrome! Oh, yea, you are right you can't machine the rotors thay are the replacement wear item. When they wear out you buy new rotors. We need a group buy for future stock!
