    Belt overtightened- Possible Damage??

Had my 13,000 km inspection done at my Yamaha dealership- only rode about 100 kms, when I noticed a clicking/binding type noise coming from the primary belt drive.

Opened up the cover (thought maybe the pulley nut was loose), everything looked okay. Then I checked the belt, it was really tight, hardly any slack at all.

Had the belt adjusted at a different Yamaha dealer (because they're 5 minutes away), and was told the bearing was likely damaged, because the noise was still there, even though the belt was loosened up enough.

I put about 100 kms on that day, and by the next day, I noticed the noise was gone (???).

My question is, do you think any damage/wear could have happened for the 100 kms I rode around with the over-tightened belt?

I'm gonna speak with the mechanic at the first dealership to find out how this could have happened, and maybe ride out there to have him inspect for any damage. Too bad, they usually do a really good job- I guess it just depends which mechanic happens to work on your bike on any given day.

They would have had to stretched that sucker royally to get the ouput shaft bearing to fail and I'm suprised that the belt didn't snap when you got on it being that tight. I wouldn't worry about it if the noise is gone. Personally, I would have taken the belt off and spun and shook the pulley to see if anything was loose and then retensioned the belt myself. I don't think any damage was done.
I always wanted the bike from TRON.

IMO the bearing is fine. I suspect the noise you heard was from the belt rubbing off center against the front or rear pulley or possible lose frt pulley.
I would suggest you thoroughly inspect the front pulley again for looseness at the spline. Visually check for red rusty colored powder on the foam inside of the frt cover and on the pulley & nut. Loosen the caliper mounting bracket on the swing arm (1-bolt), the axle nut and left adjuster to relax the pulley belt for this inspection.
I'm sorry to say that i had to replace my pulley, middle shaft, etc, etc at 7800 miles which is equivalent to your kilometers on my '04' [:(]
If the pulley, nut and splines are ok they will be very slightly corroded.
Any red dust indicates metal fatigue and should be addressed.

Yep, just the belt rub... like Alan said, inspect thoroughly and make sure the belt is adjusted correctly (warriors are generally a tight adjustment 1/4 to 3/8 inch of play at 10lbs pressure).

It should be fine. My was making some noise after I chanegd to the 31 tooth pulley...I mostly noticed when I pushed it into the garage. I realized I had overtightened the belt. I loosened it up and the noise went away.

I've also found that because I'm a big guy (6'4" and about 280) that I check the tightness with me sitting on the bike. It's easy for me to do by feel because I removed the belt guards. I adjust it slightly loose with no weight on the bike and it really tightens up when I sit on it.

Hope it's not the primary drive chain and shafts. $700 to replace--no need to ask how I know!!

    Thanks for the info, guys.

Actually, intitally I did have red coloured dust on the front pulley, but I cleaned it off and sprayed WD40 all over, and put white lithium grease in those two white plastic tubes that sit on the metal rods (just for the hell of it).

Maybe I'll have it looked at after all, just in case.

Alan, sorry to say this but I would bet your pully and shaft are smoke. Mine made the same noise with the red dust. My bike was out of warrenty but yama did cover the cost of labor and parts. Good luck with it. The belt being too tight will effect the wear of the shaft and so forth. Mine started about 300-500 miles after a rear tire change. My local dealer did not do it but they were good enough to claim they did to get me the free parts and so forth. The Belt on mine was very tight and they said this was the culprit. The tension causes enough angle to cause the nut to loosen.

jrod.... yup. If you put on your reading glasses, LOL [:D], you will see that i replaced the middle shaft & related parts back in Nov '04' [;)] and I'm happy to report that i have doubled the mileage since that repair without any further failures.
IMO your local Dealers diagnosis of the failure is not accurate at all! The 75ft~lb torque spec and original crush washer mat'l are most likely the culprits Cake
