    fork tube cover install DONE!!

I have a total of EIGHT O-rings that came with the fork covers I bought (used).

SIX of them appear to be the same size. Is this correct? I thought there were supposed to be four of one size and four of another?

OK, so I did have TEN O-rings. Two were already in the top of the notched upper cover.

I also can not seem to figure out exactly how the damn covers are supposed to slide on and stay together using the Orings. I see the indention in the lower fork tube for the longest cover, then it looks like you have a choice of either using the slim middle piece (for stock signals I presume) or the longer mid piece (in stock sigs are eliminated), the the top piece, which has the notch cut out in the top. For some reason, they just don't look right. Are you supposed to put them ALL on THEN slide the forks back in the trees? That doesn't look, nor sound right.

    I hate being mechanically challenged!

If anyone can shed some light on this I'd be greatful.. PM's with pics would help me tremendously!

OK, so here I am several hours later and quite frustrated.
I must be a friggin retard. I can NOT get the covers to slide on right...

Does ANY part of the chrome covers go THRU the tree mounts? Os do they only butt up TO them?

The left fork is being a real PITA to go back in. This is as bad as the internal wiring of the bars I did over a year ago...

I finally think I have it figured out.. except for one thing.
** If I do NOT use the stock signal bracket/spacer, do I use BOTH the small and bigger middle pieces? ** And if so, which goes where?

Looks to me like the bigger of the two goes with the piece that is notched (between the trees) and the smaller piece, along wit the long bottom piece, go below the bottom tree.

The problem I'm having now is getting the fork tube back into the upper tree.

The folks that say this is a one man job, in an HOUR no less, must be really good, technically and mechanically minded people..

    UPDATE
After another 3 hours of messing with these damn things.. I finally got them on and everything butooned back up.. well, the fender isn't on yet and teh LED wraparoudn Radiantz signals aren't done either, but that's tomorrows task. I wound up going to Home Depot and buying a Dremel to cut the cable stay off the left fork (clutch side). After that was done, teh fork slid pretty much right into place. Damn bad cable stay... LOL..

Now I just have to determine the best way to remove the Vaseline from teh outside of the fork tube covers so they'll be all spiffy clean. ANY TIPS FOR THIS?

VERY impressed with the overall new look... and I'm SURE that the LED sigs will look that much better... Now I need to source out some trees to send off for chroming... Upper and lower.. It *HAS* to be done.. LOL.. I'll send my spare stays out at teh same time and get the trees and stays done at once... More bling bling...

Thanks to Bill, aka Longdrives for talking to me about this.. and AlanH for shooting me the pics, altho my email addy isn't working for some reason or another... Bad RoadRunner.. Bad RoadRunner..

This site plain out ROCKS. WHen you're in a bind, there is someone there to help you out like RIGHT NOW.. which is great..

Thanks again everyone... and one last thing before the picture..

Are the covers supposed to spin around AT ALL? Mine, on both sides, spin a little, but not what I would call freely.

If you don't like what I have to say.... move right on along..

    Jason,
I have both the Yamaha instructions and a set from Harley Jones.... want em mailed or faxed? Six O rings are the same size only instructions show a set of 10. Drop me a PM or email and I'll send you a copy with parts list. One thing is for certain with this install..... use plenty PJ!

Re: fork tube cover install DONE!!

    Should be 10 'O-Rings' total
2-thick for the notched end in the top cover. Notching is to clear the cable guide brackets under the top tree. You might need to tweak cable guides.
6-Same size. 4 for the lower covers and 2 for the bottom of the upper cover adapters on the top of the bottom triple tree.
2-very similar to the six that go between the two top covers. Use the deep counterbore in either of the bottom pcs (long chamfered end) that you choose that sits on the top of the bottom triple tree for a go/no go gauge.
If you use the stock signals then it will be the thin cover adapter. I think this 'O-Ring' is slightly larger on the OD than the other 4.
As i recall the instructions weren't correct regarding these 'O-Rings'
Use petroleum jelly or equivalent to hold the rings in place.
Oh...4 hands will be better than 2 [;)]
Took me all night working solo..finished at six in the am. When done properly you won't be able to see the black anodized forks and the bottom cover adapter with the long chamfer won't spin. [:D]

Rrufast, check the first album "Chrome Fork Covers and MS Big Shots" for some close up photos.

Without the OEM signal brackets you use the longer pc which goes on the bottom. Read my previous post. Check the photos in the url above and observe the proper position and direction of the machined parts!

Suggest you make a trial run with the bottom cover only and see if you get it all the way up to the top tree. If the 'o-ring' slips up in the bottom tube you'll never get it flush to the top tree.

The two top pcs are a bit$#. As stated previously the notch is up to clear the cable guides. Assemble the two top pcs with the 'o-rings' and you must hold them aligned between the trees and at the same time insert the fork with the bottom tube in place. The middle 'o-ring' between the two upper pcs tends to fall out of place because the pieces are in compression with the three 'o-rings'.

As stated previously, when done properly the fork will be flush at the top and the short pc will not turn [;)]

They are looking sweet! Wish they were mine, but the raked tripple tree will eventually be ordered for mine.
