John, there are two rubber grommets in the front of the cover as you stated spaced near vertically. The secret is to pull the cover in the same position it lies on the bike. The grommet pins are perpendicular to the frame and mounted on the Oil Tank.
Edited 6/18/08 Credit to Bruce59:Spraying the grommets & pins with any type of lubrication such as soapy water or silicone will facilitate the removal of the cover.
Pull the cover straight out gripping from the front with hands located above & below the grommet bracket. Do not try to hinge the cover. PULL STRAIGHT OUT. I've had mine off earlier this year for chroming.
