Belt Adjustment with V&H Bigshots

Hate to have to remove Bigshots to adjust drive belt tension. Any sugestions on how to without taking the pipe off to get to axle bolt and adjusters?

The best way is to mark it before taking it off and set it with fingers when putting it back on. OR NEVER UNDO IT IN THE FIRST PLACE. The pulley side should be loose enough so you have the room to get the pipe side in and out. Then just adjust the pulley side. Make since?

I have also been able to get an open ended wrench and adjust it little by little.

My belt is way to tight. Came back that way from trans. recall work. Don't want to have to take it back to shop for them to fix their mistake. 100 miles and bike is torn down because I'm in middle of various mods. Looks like maybe I could heat and bend me an open ended wrench just for this purpose? I had them put on a new tire while it was there.

Belt Adjustment with V&H Bigshots using One-Off Axle Tool

Here's a tool i made to torque the rear axle nut without removing the V&H muffler. I got the idea from a posting on this site! If you search there are other versions for modified tools.

off topic but did anybody see the american hot rod episode where blubear bends his craftsman wrench to reach a bolt? He then takes it to sears and they let him exchange...i thought that was hilarious.

I have V&H's bigshots. When I adjust the belt, I loosen the axle bolt with a crescent wrench. No need to move the pipes. just count the number of times you turn the bolt so when you tighten it your "torque" is correct.

I just loosen the pipes at the back and "swing" them out of the way. I like to make sure I'm at the right torque so taking the extra 10-20 mins on moving pipe is worth it to me.

ehacker01 I saw that one too. Sears will take anything back the kids behind the counter don't care.

Justin, do you have to loosen the head pipes at the exhaust flanges to get the pipes to swing away? When my rear mufflers are loose with the V&H Big Shots there isn't that much play to get a socket & torque wrench in between! I will repost jpeg photos of tool tonight.

I'm with Bo on this. Little bit of extra work to know the belt is properly tensioned and the rear axle is properly torqued down is well worth it to me.

Slothy, as long as you keep the tourque wrench 90degrees to the tool the results are accruate.

I was the one who posted this topic a while back and it was all explained there. I looked through the "Search" but I couldn't find it. Mabey someone knows where it is at and will post it again.

Thanks

Kirby,
Here's your original posting that prompted me to fab my tool! I happen to have the luxury of a Laser machine at work so designed tool out of 1/4"CRS at 5" centerline. Works out real nice. Can use at 90deg angle as you discussed or can use as 5" lever with torque calculation formula.

Paint that nut on top before loosen. Do the same when adjusting spring preload. Use your bike tools with a piece of tube as lever.
