Clutch Cable

I just snapped my second cable. The first one, a standard OEM, snapped at the "ball" on the lever end when the bike had 2200 miles. I replaced it with an OEM stainless braided and last night, Voila, it snapped in the same exact place. This cable had only 1000 miles on it. I made sure that I lubed it well before I installed and lubed it again back in Jan/07. I have the speed star clutch set installed. I cannot see why these cables snapped. Anyone else have these issues or a recommendation for a better cable?

    Re: Clutch Cable

Check your cable routing thru the front end to make sure it has a smooth path.

That's the weak spot alright. You have to make sure that the ball/barrel whatever that steel knob on the end is called, is moving freely inside the clutch lever. It needs to be able to roll just a few degrees every time you pull the lever or the cable fatigues right there. This is the voice of experience here.

    Re: Clutch Cable

Cable is not binding and other than being a little stiffer due to the springs all appears normal.

    Hey Meatball [:D],

That makes sense. That's the only thing I didn't check. I have Chrome levers and the excess chrome in the hole might keep it from "floating" I will check that when I get home tonight. I bet I'll have to clean the chrome out of the hole. Thanx Bro.

    Re: Clutch Cable

RF_WIZ.... the following is taken from this earlier thread:http://www.rswarrior.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=50615

Also, the orientation of the slot in the cable adjustment bolt can cause premature failure IMO

Unlike the OEM cable the BARNETT clutch cable has a 2-pc connection at the clutch lever barrel joint and the lever assy @ the clutch perch that probably prevents twisting and less stress to the swaged ends than the OEM cable.

The swagged end at the lever is made up of 2 pcs similar to a ball and socket and appears to be more flexible with less stress acting on the cable

IMHO, the straight end at the clutch lever is more desirable for the 'TT' bars. The OEM style angled fitting applies undue stress to the stranded clutch cable with straight bars

I had Barnett fabricate a std length clutch cable with a Road* straight end at the clutch lever that i purchased thru Phats mid '05' that has reduced the pull force of the lever. Enclosing some jpegs of the cable.

BTW, i'm not the pioneer of this cable mod, just duped it from a forum member and can't remember who....so thanks [;)]

and another piece of advice: when ordering your replacement clutch cable, order two of them so you'll have a backup when the 3rd one breaks.

That's how I got home last night. Had my neighbor go in my garage and bring me the spare.

    Re: Clutch Cable

You have to lube the clutch cable when you install it? Where and with what type of lube. I just replaced mine last night and did not know to do that.

My OEM snapped also but then I replaced it about 4000 miles ago and it seems to be doing okay. I also have chrome levers so I wonder if there is some chrome in the whole that is inteferring with the barrel end?? Let us know if and when you find out.

Go to Phatperformance.com and look at the cleaners and lube section, you'll find the lube and the proper tool to throughly lube the cable. I do mine twice a year.

Also try the Barnett SS cable and lube it well. It pulls much better. The Baron's SS clutch cable sucks......
