Looking for opinions on the Road Star Roadliner

My 19 year old son is actively shoping for his first bike. He rides my warrior alot and likes it. But, he's 6'3" and 280 lbs. So the bike looks kinda small with him on it. Anyway, we went to the dealer yesterday and had a look at what they had. The bike he looked best on was the Roadliner. They have a Midnight version (all black anyway, forks, and all hardware is black chrome kinda finished)that looks sweet. Anyone have comments or opinions on these? The manager says he'll sell him the bike for $10k out the door. Thanks.

Re: Looking for opinions on the Road Star Roadliner

The Yamaha Star Roadliner won Cycle World's Magazines "Best Cruiser of the Year" when it was introduced in 2006.  Personally I think it's got a great look, and it looks alot like the brand new 2010 Yamaha Star Statoliner Deluxe, which is a very cool bike.  Ultimately if he likes it and can get for that price I'd jump on it!  It's the exact same platform as the new $17,000 plus Stratoliner.  You get the same proven 1854cc engine (183cc's more than the Roadstar Warrior), an air cooled 48 degree V Twin with 4 valves per cylinder and final belt drive) and the 2009 Yamaha Star Roadliner's MSRP is $14,090 to $15,190!

I know I would have loved to have that kind of machine at his age, and I'll be intrested to see what he decides on.

Moving parts in rubbing contact require lubrication to avoid excessive wear. Honorifics and formal politeness provide lubrication where people rub together. Often the very young, the untraveled, the naive, the unsophisticated deplore these formalities as "empty," "meaningless," or "dishonest," and scorn to use them. No matter how "pure" their motives, they thereby throw sand into machinery that does not work too well at best.

I didn't ride it, but, it'll need pipes...lol...sounded whimpy. But pipes = PCIII, PCIII = Big Air Kit....ect....lol. Seemed light and I bet it handles good for a big cruiser. He doesn't expect it to handle like my warrior. We'll see. He wanted to get it today, but I talked him into waiting until Monday and shop around a bit. Just looking for input from someone who maybe has been on one. It's a good deal on a great looking bike. He just got hired by the Sheriff's Office so he's chomping at the bit to spend money already....lol. I'll keep you posted on his choice. I hope he gets it though. LOL, I'd have no problems swapping bikes once in a while....lol.

I rode one and it's a great bike. Handling is great for a big bike. Pulls about the same as the warrior.

That sounds like a killer deal, too.

Surprised he's not more interested in a Raider.

He didn't like the Raider at all. To be honest, with his build, the Raider looks small too....lol.

im almost the same build and the warrior fits me very nice but the larger cruiser is a nice bike ,but doesnt work as well as a warrior in the turns and twisties dept, i know someone will jump in here and say the liners will do anything you need and they probably will just depends on how effeicently it does it ,if you have to push the bike to the boarder line just to do the same thing the warrior does with ease then thats no fun, but do what you will . the warrior just has one heck of alot of mods and style differences to make it a more customizable bike in my book, but if cruiser look is what your into then the other is the way to go for you . good luck and ride safe. btk572

Agreed. But, my Warrior is always available to him should the urge arise to hit some corners!

If it's a midnight then I believe that must be an overstock '09 correct?  Still, $10K OTD for a brand new Roadliner that he likes sounds like a good deal to me.  It's hard to worry too much about the cost of pipes when you're saving $5K isn't it?  I don't have any firsthand experience riding one but they're good looking and you know you can trust the manufacturer obviously.

Last years president of my local star chapter has one he did some internal engine work to it and his will out run most warrior's.  He put a corbin seat, fairing, and hard bags on it and he does ride it a lot.  When I last talked with him about it he said that it was a real comfortable bike for long range cruising.

    I road one... My opinion..

    School Bus

If cruising around and looking at the scenery is your thing it is probably a good bike. If you happen to be one of those people that "ride with a purpose" its a school bus.

Sounds like you've guys have made a decision!  I am sure that you'll really enjoy riding together and the Roadliner will be a great swap it up sometimes, I think.  I agree with Marco Polo and I didn't even think to metion it earlier, your saving way more on the bike than the PC, BAK & Exhuast will cost all together!

Is he going to Mod it right away?

They live in Florida, I don't think "twisties" are much of a daily concern there, are they?  All kidding aside, the 'liners are gorgeous, and it sounds like a great deal on a leftover '09.  You and your son have fun, and stay safe.  BTW, what lives in your Kegerator?  I keep Estes Park Brewery Stinger Wild Honey Wheat in mine.  Feel free to stop by for  a draw if you're ever in Colorado (lots of twisties here!).
