Man I didn't need to read this! I have a DV6000. right now the POS will not play sound over the speaker. For some reason it still thinks the headphones are plugged in.  Angry

That's a different issue... any competent tech can repair your problem.... either drivers or open the laptop up and disect the head phone jack... I would try first removing all audio drivers reboot and reinstall the original drivers from the hp web. Sometimes the windows update updates certain hardware drivers and end up being incompatible.

The DV6000/dv9000 have various problems... most common is the BGA Chip on the mainboard needing to be re-soldered. There are many DIY methods on youtube mostly with a heat gun, but I've never tried it myself...

    Here's a sample with a similar laptop

And this one with really freaky music... sorry it's in spanish and english

I belive the problem ones where the ones with the nVidia chipset I think. If you have the ATI model I believe this is not a problem.

My wife has DV 6000.  It is a POS.  Had to send it in twice for repair.

Re: I need a new computer and Vista sucks.. MAC???

My daughter has a dv6000 going on 3 years old no problems yet (knock on wood) I'M going to buy her a new Sony Vaio for Xmas and will be taking hers over and installing Windows 7. Hope I can get a few more years out of it. It was under $600 new so if I can get a couple of more years out of it that would be about $125 per year.

My son has a $2000 Mac Book Pro so you do the math!!!  I don't think he will get 16 years out of it. Macs may be great but to me aren't worth the $$$$$. He had to have the logic board replaced under warranty after 3 mo. cause of a sound issue. Pretty piss poor if you asked me for a 2K computer. I hate to think what it may cost to fix this thing when the warranty runs out. I think of them like BMW's or Mercedes there great cars until you got to get them worked on.

I'm typing this right now on a 6year old XP Pro that the only thing I have ever done to it was a $50 power supply about 2 years ago. I say upgrade to Windows 7!!!

Hell I'll take that HP off your hands!!!Stick out tongue

If you only do what you know you can do- you'll never do very much!!

I still like to play the occasional PC games here and there so Macs do me no good because even on occasions where a Mac version is available it's ussually not supported as well it seems.  It's good that you can do more on a Mac nowadays then before but there's still a lot out there that you can't do.

If all you're doing is what you said then you could practically buy any cheapo PC off the shelf with Windows 7 and should have little to no problem at all.  I've got an i7 920 with 9GB of DDR3 1300 RAM and a TB HD personally but you can only pop open a website or email so fast so you might as well save yourself that extra grand for some other toy in my opinion.

I like the new Mac commercial though...  "It seems like I've heard that before PC."  I know 7 is actually better then Vista but isn't that a lot like me kicking you in the nads and then flicking your ear and telling you how nice things are now?  Of course, it's not like it matters when you've already let someone kick you in the junk 6 times (actually 8 times) already before.  They know by now you're not REALLY going anywhere.

Thanks Eric! mush appreciated. I think I'm gonna ride out the storm as is with this unit and a LONG ethernet cord back to my hub/router.

    BTW....here's what the folks at Dynojet had to say about the power commander software on a Mac;

We only support our software on PC's. I have heard there are ways to run PC software on a Mac, but I personally have no experience in this.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

now some of us now about running things like "parrellels" or other windows simulation type products on the Mac in order to use pc based programs. Also the is the question of a "dual boot" Mac....ie, both windows and Mac OS loaded loaded on differant partitions of the hard drive.

if we haven't heard yet from anyone using a Mac out there today to run the dynojet software maybe some feedback in this thread would be helpful when it comes to buying the Mac or pc.

I'd go Mac! fact, my Dell pavillion media laptop just lost the wireless card. Worse yet i googled the probelm and found that the mother board has a defect which is not really worth repairing. So now I'm stuck hard wired at home. can't even use a pcmcia woreless card...the unit just wont see it.

Go to Ebay search for a replacement Motherboard... Yes your laptop has an issue with the WIFI internal features but can be fixed... you are probably looking at around $120... I would need a complete model # to give you a precise number.... You will still need a reliable Tech to do the install but it's pretty much straight forward.. you might be able to do the install with a lot of patience.

On the other hand I've never received one with your issues that had PCMCIA problems at the same time... maybe I've been lucky.

I can put you in contact with a good tech that will fix most any laptop motherboard but his prices are usually about $92 (if you send him the motherboard removed) plus shipping  which for me it's usually about $12. He's never failed me with hard to find Motherbaords... but usually I find Motherboards in good working conditions of ebay for much lower.

I don't have a powercommander, so I can't test the dynojet software. But, I use both BootCamp (dual boot) and Parallels on my MacPro and they both work great. In BootCamp I am pretty sure there wouldn't be any issues as for the most part the Mac looks like a native windows box to windows. In Parallels when I plug a USB device in I can tell it to be "owned" by windows and it will show up there too. So, I think (but can't confrim) that the Dynojet software should work with either solutions.

This what I am think of buying. What do you think? Be honest on the computer and not the price so much. I like the idea of having the TV available option for its future location. Thanks

The touch screen looks interesting, you don't have small children which will

be using it though do you? I think you'd be cleaning the screen alot. The rest

    seem good to me.

I have always questioned the effectivness of a touchscreen computer. Graphic Tablet, Cell Phone, yes, makes sense. Computer not so much.

BTW,  I use this to watch / record tv on my MacPro and it works well. HDHomeRun. Takes a bit of hard drive space thou, 1 hour is about 5 gigs. Good thing 1 TB drives are cheap!!

The touch screen will probably never be used unless I can find a mega touch bar game program..lol.. I mainly want the TV portion because it will be located near the Kitchen in a dinning area where it might come in handy.

    What is core I7? Thanks

Well gents I need a computer. I bought this HP terra bite giga bite hdmi thing about 6 months ago and its nice but vista I am guesssing just destroys the way its supose to work.

I have a relatively new computer running Vista 64.  Originally, it was awful and gave me at least a bi-weekly blue screen of death.  A little over a month ago I installed Service Pack 2 on it and it has been running really well ever since.  SP2 is a free download from Microsoft.

Don't know why everyone is complaining about Vista - I have the 32 bit version with 0 issues.  Well that i can blame on the software anyway Indifferent
