DarkStar:When I started working as a civilian I paid as low as $30.00 per week for a Family Plan typical Blue Cross Blue Shield with Dental & Eye Care. Today's rising health care cost has me at $210.00 per week for similar coverage with the same provider. Lets be real. Our current health care system is out of control cost wise. I am all for helping our fellow American Citizen and their families during difficult times, but I am against providing coverage for Illegal Immigrants. Who knows when I might be out of work and dealing with unemployment and will need help to cover my family. Its all about taking care of our own. Every American deserves to have some sort of health coverage for themselves and their children, their families. The children need help. Our parents need help. Our grand parents need help. My friend's need help........and quite honestly that is all that matters. Taking care of our own.
When I started to work in 1974 a loaf of bread was .24 cents. A gallon of milk was around a $1.25. Gasoline was .50 cents a gallon. I was making $4.85 an hour. Minimum wage was $2.00 an hour. My dad bought a brand new car for $3900. In 1982, when my first son was born, I paid nothing for health insurance. I was making about $350.00 a week working 3 part time jobs and goin' to college 14 hours a week. I bought my first car, a five year old Ford, for $500.00 in 1975.
Everything's gone up. Even the freakin' speed limit.
I would speculate that most people with out health insurance, choose not to purchase health insurance. I would speculate that most people with out health insurance probably have purchased a cell phone, cable tv, with premium channels, that they view on a huge screen TV. They probably have computers and internet access, probably eat out three or four times a week. I'm not saying that all people without insurance are this way. BUT, I would speculate that most of them make the choice not to purchase health insurance.
Their thinking is that "It's just too expensive and the law says the hospital can't turn me away if I need medical attention anyway. So, I'll spend my money on the things that are really important to me."
This whole thing could have been "Fixed" by expanding Medicare to those who are "truly in need".
