Daft questions from a new owner!...

    Hello all,

Great bikes these Warriors, the one I've just bought has blown me away! A great site to share & support also! It's a pity Yamaha only marketed Warriors for a short while here in the UK, I think they might have shot themselves in the foot there!

Anyway, back to the daft questions for you...

1/ Being one of the seemingly few folks who like the original bazooka I've refitted mine, which the previous owner had kept, but I don't understand why there is a small hole on the underside of the silencer at the header end with exhaust pressure coming out. Did the first owner slip in his garage with a drill in his hand, has a plug gone astray, should I block it or just think "sod it" & go for a ride instead of wasting time thinking about it?

2/ Is there a lighter set of clutch springs available that will still handle the power? (Bad wrist!)

3? I'm absolutely no mechanic but am I correct in thinking that some of the torque settings in the service manual are somewhat over enthusiastic in a thread stripping, bracket busting sort of way & to be read with a good dose of common sense?

    Cheers, Andy W

1/ is it a drain perhaps?  I haven't had my stock can on in years - I don't recall if it had a hole or not...

2/ most of us go with heavier springs - the stock clutch can slip at times.  You could relube the cable to make it as easy as possible to pull...

3/ I always use my calibrated elbow to determine proper torque!

    Andy, welcome to the forum.

    1. The hole in your exhaust may be a loudener for your silencer, but I haven't seen a stock exhaust in awhile. I suppose it might be a drain hole to keep water from collecting in your pipe, but it shouldn't have exhaust leaking there if that were the case.

    2. There are heavier springs, so I assume there is a way to get lighter springs. I would certainly not recommend that because your clutch will start to slip on you if you go any lighter.

    3. I don't have the manual in front of me, but they may be listed in different units. I apologize if that's a stupid suggestion to you, but some people don't know the difference between inch-lbs, foot-lbs and newton-meters.

    Hi again!

Thanks for the replies & the welcome.

For the silencer hole...I feel the judicious use of a self tapping screw coming on!

Clutch springs...thought as much, I guess the wrist will just have to suffer for the sake of Warriordom!

Torque setting wise...love the calibrated elbow approach Rhatphlegm, my kind of thinking!

ridingrules...you had me worried for my sanity there for a moment but after a panic stricken double check...38lb/ft for an aluminium muffler bracket? I'll use the calibrated elbow approach on that one!

    Thanks again, Andy W.

Re: Daft questions from a new owner!...

    Welcome Andy,

    1. The holes in the back of the stock (and many aftermarket) header pipes are factory threaded bungs that should have a threaded plug installed.  There is one behind each header pipe.  If you are missing one, possibly remove the other to match.  Don't re-thread the hole you'll possibly want it later as retrofit oxygen sensors continue to shrink amazingly small.  Its possible a local dealer will have a spare from a customer who had them install new pipes.  If you plan to swap pipes, plug it with anything!  Also, you can ask any prior owner if he has the header plugs.

    2. What year is your bike?  Its possible the stock clutch spring still resides in your bike, or its possible someone upgraded to an SR2 which is heavier.  Nothing less than the stock clutch spring will do.  In fact it needs to be heavier to handle the full torque.

    3. There are a couple of torque settings in the service manual that are incorrect.  With an aluminum motor its very advisable to follow the manual's torque settings otherwise.   But for those that have been verified incorrect, look in the DOWNLOADS section (to the right of HOME) then click on the 'Reference Materials' folder, then look for a file called 'Notes from My Service Manual' it contains the torque corrections discovered and verified by several other members.  NOTE: some torque specs are so small, like 17FtLbs, its uncommon to have a wrench to read that small, in which case you can get a wrench or use your experience factor.  As you know, stripping aluminum threads in a motorcycle often results in loads of pain and vanishing chrome money.

Here's a direct link (but take time to see what files live in that folder they are handy as heck).

Follow the service manual's recommendation notes for when to use Loctite 243 Blue (removable without heat).

    Andy,

    Welcome to the 4M.

Check out the European sections, it's where most of the UK owners hang out.

Where in the UK are you?

Ask as many questions as you like, you'll always get answers....

Re: Daft questions from a new owner!...

oh yes nearly forgot ...the standard clutch set up is so easy to move a child could move it...some have additional 'weight' to the clutch for all sorts of reasons and need strong hands to ride....so we need info to help...no holes should be visible on stock exhaust...Arizona is spot on [as usual]

torque settings are goodYes...but they are in Nm's and ft lbs....so be aware...all but a very few eg 'drive sprocket' are spot on, but don't think you'll be going there alone just yet?...how are your wrenching skills...lol...many of us like torque settings, we may not be great meachanics but we care about our bikes!! Geeked
