Maybe he should just stick to riding in his own lane rather than hoping that cagers are willing to share their.

People in CA are very good when it comes to sharing the road with bikes.  I was there 3 weeks ago, and didn't feel uncomfortable at all lane splitting. People would actually move right or left to let me by.  I would never try that in Texas though, people around here think that they own the road and we are just a nuisance to them!!!

I'd wondered why nobody else noticed that he was passing on the right side....serves him right, sorry to say. Poor multi-millionaire. Maybe his even stranger and richer wife can adopt a couple of politicians so he can do that legally...not. Wink

It's not illegal to lane split or pass on the right in California.  Amazingly, the concept of slower traffic keeping right is actually almost completely foreign here somehow and in the bay area it doesn't work anyway because even most surface streets now have HOV lanes that are on the right instead of the left.  He just needs to pay better attention to what the hell he's trying to do.  I don't understand how this is news but whatever floats people's boat I guess.

Ok, so I guess that us Canucks will have to be excused from this discussion then...we aren't allowed to do either of those things, neither with cage or cycle...but, having said that, it does happen more than I can count. I would never attempt it on the bike, some human pinata on his/her cel phone or adjusting their CD player would put an end to me and my large ass! [:'(]

It's still not legal to lane split in Texas though is it?  If it weren't legal here then I'd be willing to bet you'd see the same behavior instead of people moving over because they feel legally obligated to.  I still run into people occasionally who don't realize motorcycles have the right to use the HOV lane and they can be somewhat rude about it.

I don't know who built that bobber he is on but it is "the business"!

I wish they would legalize lane splitting here. There is nothing worse then getting caught in five o'clock traffic on a bike when you could just as easily putt between the cars and be on your way.

No lane splitting isn't legal in Texas. Even if it was it take years before people would yeild to bikers down here. I don't know if californians are legaly obligated to move over or not, some of them didn't, I got stuck behind a guy in a Lexus for two miles in the twisties going really slow and he wouldn't budge, and when it cleared up I went to pass him and he sped up to block me, I passed him anyway and didn't see him after that. But in general people in your area seem very nice about it.

Yeah, it's very accepted and for the most part nobody has a problem with it or at least not that they'll say.  They aren't legally obligated to by the way, it just seems like you are though when you know the rider has as much right to the lane as you do.  It's got it's good and bad because as you can see from his video, not everyone can do it without clipping a mirror every now and then.  You've also got the guys that will lane split going 90mph down the highway when traffic is cruising around 50mph.  It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that when a car decides to suddenly change lanes without being able to see the bike 20 cars back that it can get hairy.  I have a pretty large bike now with wide bars so I pretty much limit my lane splitting to low speeds or getting to the front of the lines at stops or stop and go traffic.
