    Cam help

Just got a set of new in the box speed star pistons and cams off ebay. Very pleased with purchase price and buy in general but have a concern with one of the cams. There are a few small nicks on one of the cams. Before I head to machine shop I would like to get a second or third opinion. Is possable the came is fine also. Never have luck putting pics in posts so I just included the link. Another question is I see there are no lifters with the cams. Is it ok to use the old lifters? I grew up working on V8's and we would always replace the lifters if we swapped a cam out.

on flat tappet cams you must change the lifters with the cam, do a search on Chrysler Lifters, it is said that they fit the warror and are much much cheaper.

I would get those looked at before installing. Do you have the part# for the cams?

My .02 is I would not install that cam with those dings. Allways use new lifters with a new cam.

WHERE are the dings? if they're on the face where the lifters run they're probably garbage.

It is on the back side of the lobe. These are new cams in the box so I am surprised to say the least. I will have to take the cam to a machine shop and get their opinion I guess.

Do a search on lifters. I am about positive it was chevrolet lifters some of our members used to replace the stock lifters with.

http://rswarrior.com/forums/p/26226/380364.aspx#380364 Try this link. I did a quick search and this may help. I know a more extensive search would reveal the GM lifters being used.

    Re: Cam help

Lifters tend to ride slightly offcentered on cams. This provides a little spin. Surely the QC department would have  thrown the cam out on inspection if it were bad, although it does appear to be a casting flaw.

    Re: Cam help

dont fool yourself about the qc thing .they will sell what ever they can no matter who the manufacture is just about . DO NOT use that cam and there is NO question its junk, especialy with the fact it is a flat tappet cam they wear alot anyway because the low zink levels in the new oils and the typical break in. oils dont protect like they should.that alone will kill some cams if your not very meticulous about the breakin procedures you use.you can see it hasnt been dropped or used so there should be no question on the return of the cam unless you bought it and no return was part of the buy. wait do it right and be done ,or do it several times over and be mad about the work the whole time. is there any question about the correct thing to do ? good luck btk572
