    tostyj:

I don't get you sometimes Damon.  You're description of yourself is an agnostic athiest, right?  Defined as the absence of the belief in God due to lack of evidence...not 100% disbelief (unless I'm misunderstanding the definition, which is entirely possible).  Why are you so emphatic about something that you aren't 100% on?  You have a sig line implying that all religons are wrong, yet you can't prove it and by definition of being agnostic you aren't totally sure.  It could even be said that you have faith...faith that there is no God, since you can't conclusively disprove such an entity's existence and would be hard pressed to present any concrete evidence supporting your belief or lack there of.

Yes, I'm an agnostic atheist.  It would be foolish to make a conclusive statement like, "god absolutely does not exist," simply because we have not examined every atom in the cosmos to verify this.  By the same token, one could not logically make the statement, "there are no magical elves in the Andromeda Galaxy."

Religion and god are not the same thing.  I have seen no evidence for god, so I don't believe in it, although I cannot conclusively state that it doesn't exist.   HOWEVER, we know, and we can prove, that religious dogmas are objectively, verifiably wrong.  The Earth is not 6,000 years old.  Modern humans did not descend from a pair of humanoid golems sculpted from dust and animated by magic, just as modern animals were not conjured in their present form.  The moon never split in half and the sun never crashed into the Earth.  The story of Jesus is largely plagiarized from the stories of Mythras, Horus, Attis, and other popular god-man saviors of the past.

    tostyj:

I'm suppose I'm agnostic, but I certainly don't "disagree" with other people's religons or faiths.  If it helps them in their lives and they don't try to sell it to me or somehow interfere with my rights, I'm good with it and couldn't care less.  It may not be your intention, but you often sound very much like the people you disagree with.  Like you are selling agnostic atheism or whatever it is you want to call it.  I don't get why you'd even bother having a sig line that says "You're All Wrong".  Why bother getting all amped up about something you don't believe in, when you could spend that time and energy on things that you do believe in.

The verifiable untruths of religion have a great effect on society.  If everyone kept their religion private, I wouldn't have anything to say about it.  However, when one sees stultifying nonsense taught to children in schools, moral philosophy impeded by religious dogma, and planes flown into buildings in the name of god, how can one not get amped up about religion?

    tostyj:

As for me, I have a great deal of faith...I have faith that never again I will be minding my own business, reading through a thread only to be exposed to a gay pic of some dude with no shirt, chaps, and a gun posing like he's in a Calvin Klein ad.  I guess that makes me a Damonkeepyourfuckinclothesonist.

Hey don't blame me for that.  I didn't post it.

Damon, thanks for the response.  Believe it or not, my post was sincere and not a "I'm gonna prove this guy wrong" type of thing.  You'd get along with my Dad.  My Grandfather was a Lutheran minister...my Dad was not...we'll leave it at that.  Ooh and my inadvertant implication that God and religon are the same was unintentional and obviously incorrect.  I sit corrected.

However, I will remain a Damonkeepyourfuckinclothesonist and continue to blame your for it...because if you hadn't posed for the pic, there'd be nothing to post in the first place.  Wink

I will take 50% of the blame because I found the pic on his myspace and posted it.  I did it to make a joke  about him not wearing a shirt, but it went too far to the gay side by the 4m jokers.  Anyway Damon is a good sport about it. Yes

I could go on, but is it necessary?  Tell me, why do you suppose my life has been simple or easy, and what other challenges would you like me to undertake before I'll be entitled to a meaningful opinion?

I assumed some youth and innocence from your lack of compassion.

I think you're confusing concepts or terminology here.  How have I demonstrated a lack of compassion?

No more and no less effort than you put into your Harley defense posts. How many times have you retold the story on how you beat a Warrior? Stick out tongue  Thanks for the entertainment.  YesBig Smile

As I've said many times, I'm only here to help.  Smile  You should have said "...how you beat a Warrior TWICE in a row."  tsk tsk.  I see I'm going to have to retell the story to refresh everyone's memory.  Thanks for clearing that up for me!  YesBig Smile

By refering to someone's faith as " reprehensible ".  Sometimes faith is what gets a person through the day.

Whether you feel they should have faith or not, if it is what gets them through to the next day, I say it is a valued item in their arsenal against the realities life throws at us.

I would not want to be the one to take that away from someone if it works for them.  You have found some comfort in your "truth" as you see it.  That is great if it works for you.  Everyone is different, and to belittle them with words like " reprehensible " does neither you nor them any good.  Be happy that they have found something that works for them as you have found for yourself.  In the end it doesn't really matter if its not real...

I surely have no proof one way or the other.

That's not a lack of compassion - that's a lack of willingness to patronize people.

Do you also refrain from using strong words like "reprehensible" to describe suicide bombers and those Westboro Baptist folks with the "Thank God for Dead Soldiers" signs?  I mean, their faith works for them, and certainly helps get them through the day.

Of course it matters whether or not its real.  The everyday, moderate religious folk serve as the power base for the extremists.  Without society's tacit approval of faith-based actions, the nutcases would all be safely locked away and medicated instead of out wreaking havoc.

I could go way out here and take what you are saying right here to mean that since I am an everyday, moderately religious Baptist, then I am responsible for the actions of the Westboro Baptist folks.  Not really getting in the middle of this, just making an observation.

Yes it is, whether you have the capability to realize it or not and you can debate that ALL DAY long and it won't make it any less true.

Tough love != lack of compassion.

Reprehensible means something deserving of criticism. Believing in things without evidence is deserving of criticism. Not criticizing any specific person, but the flawed concept. Life is not advanced by just making stuff up as we go, it is advanced by accepting reality and striving for understanding.

If strong evidence for bat crap crazy, religious zealots who oppose everything for which Jesus stood being escorted through pearly gates upon death surfaces, I'll bet Damon would become a Republican tomorrow.
