    OH NOOOOOOOOOO RED DUST.

Actually it is not on my bike. My son borrowed my brothers 05 warrior so that we could take our annual fall road ride. I was checking the bike out and decided to check the front pulley. When we removed the pulley cover, there was some red dust. not a lot but there it was. The lock washer was still bent, there was no noise, but there is red dust. I cleaned the threads, used blue loctite and torqued to 130lbs. I know, I know, 125 seems to be the consensus, but I was adjusting the torque wrench and it was on 130 before I knew it, so I used it. I think I cught it in time. How many have caught theirs early and continued to ride? Is it still going good?

The bike had about 1/3 of what this picture shows, follow the link. http://rswarrior.com/forums/p/26393/381892.aspx#381892

I'm interested to know, too.  But it seems like it would be hard to know if its 'caught early' or not.

If you looked at the picture to the link of mrwilsons pulley, the pulley on my brothers bike is not nearly as bad. The thing is, we intend to leave in the morning on about a 600 - 700 mile trip. I thought maybe someone else had caught theirs like that, and did what I did, and I just wanted to see how it did for them.

I'd say go for it.  Make sure the belt tension is good and the belt i stracking good.  Pull the cover and take a look when you break for lunch and maybe again when you stop for the night. It only takes a few minutes and wil easy your mind.  Chances are everything will be fine.  If not. take it easy on the ride home.

At about 12k miles I found  a little red dust on mine . Cleaned everything real good , got a new lock washer. and reinstalled it all with red locktite and 125 lbs torque. At about 15 k miles went with the 31 t pulley and installed with same procedure, new lockwasher , red locktite and 125lb torque. Almost 30k and I just checked for red dust after reading this thread and found zero red dust. This procedure works , for me anyway..

How do you get that nut off after using red loctite?    I have had stuff that had to be cut off after using that it.  No amount of heat, short of enough to melt/cut, did anything.

i've used brake cleaner to dissolve the red loctite before. i'm sure in this case you could bust out the old trusty impact, but then again, i've never done the pulley nut on this bike...

jabo, I did the quick fix and it lasted 5,000 + miles. I've since replaced the shaft, pulley, nut, and lock washers. I pull the cover off and have a looksee a couple of times a year just to ease my mind.

The bike I found it on is my brothers, I thought since my son is going to use it for a trip I would do a little preventitive maintemance. That is when I found the dust. I pull the cover on my bike about 2 times a year and all seems well there. I have almost 25k on my bike my brothers has 22k.

So for people not experiencing red dust, is it a good idea to pull the cover and do the above procedure?

I used a small propane torch , being easy not to melt any o rings in the area , then got the big torque wrench out and it came loose .

    Re: OH NOOOOOOOOOO RED DUST.

MIne started leaking transfer case oil (again) from behind the drive pulley a few months back so I pulled the pulley off and replaced both seals.  It went away and started again, I pulled the cover off and there was the red dust.  Second time it has happened to my bike.  I fixed the leak and wiped everything down and bought a new nut and washer.  That was 1500 miles ago and I just put 700+ miles on it Saturday.  Just keep an eye on it, it will will let you know when it is time to replace it.  You will here a popping or clunking noise when you role it backwards and then forwards.  It really sucks because you have to replace the drive pulley, bearings, seals and shaft when it goes.
