    Can a 2002 Warrior original exhaust be debaffled and valve clacking sound question?

    Hello,

    I just picked up a beautiful used, low mileage 2002 Warrior today. My first time riding one and I love it. However, I would love to have a little more growl from that huge muffler. Does anyone know if this can be modified or debaffled without a major investment.

    Also, when engaging first gear from a stopped position the engine "clacks" a bit for a second then is fine... like if the valves are off. I wonder if this is normal for this engine or if I should be worried and have it checked. Any comments/experience to share?

    Many thanks!!!

    Yes, there are a couple of mods for the stock can.  Check in here:  http://rswarrior.com/forums/t/115929.aspx

    Not sure about the clacking unless maybe it's maybe knocking.  What mods have been done to the engine and what octane gas are you using?  If you aren't already using the higher octane fuel you may want to try it for a tank.

    have you checked the oil?  Usually due to low oil level.  Since you just bought it from someone and aren't 100% of the maintenance, go ahead and just change it.

    I got bored one day and cut about 6" off of the can to match my fender.  What you will find inside are 4 separate pipes.  Only one runs thru the pipe from were the headers merge from two into one.  The other three pipes act like baffles much like the ports in a speaker box.  Here is the catch, the exhaust pipe does not run down the center of the can.  When you are standing at the back of the bike, the exhaust pipe runs along the bottom.  In the 6 inches I cut off, the pipe has a "S" bend in it to bring the pipe out in the center.  I made a new cap to cover the end of the pipe much like the stock cap.  I will try to post a couple of pictures tomorrow.

    As for the clacking, I would check your plugs to see if you are getting a spark knock and take the pulley cover off and see if you have any red dust present.

    If you lug the engine off the line, the valves will clatter also. Make sure you aren't being too gentle upon take-off from a stop. Give it some RPM's. Also, try running a quality, synthetic oil.

    Sounds like the clutch adjustment is off and the gears are grinding a little as you put it into 1st gear.   Welcome to the 4M and let us know what you find:}

I'm selling the slipon exhauts can, as I've have replaced it with the Vanve&Hines 2 - 1 ProPipes. Originally paid $702.00 Cdn. Make me an offer. Thanks

    Hello Allan, welcome to the forum and congratulations on your Warrior!

    This Beast has a few racing-designed systems that are maintained a little differently that you might expect.  You might already know that the Warrior's oil system is dry sump which is intended to keep oil from sloshing around in an oil pan when you are racing around the twisties.  Sorta like keeping the blood pumping to your head lol.  There's a special procedure to change the oil, there are two drain points, and finally there is a special procedure to check the oil level.  All are described in the Service Manual.  If you need a servie manual, see the Popular Mods post under 'Manuals' for a link to a freebie e-manual covering the 2002 model.  If you already knew this, just ignore me, however this might be the reason for the low-speed clanking.

    Another reason might be lugging, but check the oil level correctly first.  Don't be afraid to open the throttle!

    OldMan pointed you to the 'Exhaust' section of the Popular Mods post, and there are a couple links there for ways members have modified the stock can and made it look better and sound better.

    Good luck!
