Palin Steps Down...Won't Seek Re-Election (WSJ)

It's interesting that this was released on a slow news cycle - a Friday before the 4th of July.  Does anyone have other news or speculation on this?  I think it's very odd that she doesn't finish out her term and refuses to seek re-election if she wants to be considered a viable 2012 presidential candidate.  I guess that's what happens when you elect a maverick to office!!

I'd like to hear comments/opinions/speculation on this news from the usual Republican trolls here on RSW.

Palin to Quit as Alaska Governor, Won't Seek Re-Election

    By Yukari Iwatani Kane

Sarah Palin said Friday that she won't run for a second term as governor of Alaska and will transfer her responsibilities to the state's lieutenant governor.

In a statement, Ms. Palin, who is in her final year in office as governor, said, "I am determined to take the right path for Alaska even though it is not the easiest path."

"I also felt that to embrace the conventional 'Lame Duck' status in this particular climate would just be another dose of 'politics as usual,'" she said.

Ms. Palin said she would transfer power to Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell on July 26.

Her decision not to run for a second term will likely fuel speculation about whether she may make a presidential bid in the 2012 election. Ms. Palin was the vice presidential nominee for the Republican party in 2008.

At the time, her selection by Republican presidential candidate John McCain drew controversy because she was a relative neophyte on the political scene. Ms. Palin has since continued to be in the news for everything from her wardrobe choices to her sparring with late night host David Letterman over remarks he made about one of Ms. Palin's daughters.

She was seen as a shoe in for a second term, this was shared by political figures pro and con.

It would allow her to focus on a run for president? Most second term Gov's are there just to take care of pet projects before they leave anyway. Then again she cant fart without having it all over the news and this is with her being an unqualified has run, but Lib. trolls seem to keep her in the spot light for some reason. Kinda like this post. Sad

I have a bunch of family and friends that live in Alaska and they were as surprised as everyone else.  My guess would be either a run for the big house or an offer with a big security tie in.

I'm guessing it's either for future political moves or maybe it's getting to be to much for

her family. Being watched by the media and being the butt of jokes. No pun

I am pretty much a moderate, I did not see what she brought to the table besides ***.... Nice ones at that but was not impressed with her arguments or positions. Why resign with one year to go? seems funny to me.

Oh yes please do put your faith in Palin for 2012.  She's half the opponent that McCain is and will be crushed.

alaska state law won't allow her to make money from her political exploits (such as a memoir, etc) while she's in office, and the iron isn't going to get hotter for her.  it's a self-serving move, presumably for financial and/or presidential campaign reasons...i'd feel pretty duped if i'd been an alaskan who voted for her.
